I have a yamaha 3 cylinder snowmobile 4 stroke engine, 120 hp want to build a surface drive mud motor, have a question on the electric clutch as I don;t want to run the centrifigual clutch. Give me some input....

I dont see how an electronic clutch could hold up to that kind of power. I would think the typical sled clutch would be a better route. Now keeping it dry is going to be a problem.

here is the problem I see with a sled clutch, If I want to run slow speeds I run into a belt issue, the electric clutch like mudbuddy uses i don;t know what they are rated.. I am actually working on a transmission right now that may work..... and will have reverse/ will keep you informed

yes it is feasable.. There is all kinds of aftermarket transmissin and belt drive accessories available for that kind of engine. I see a lot of them in dune buggy and cart instalations where money is no object. Since it is 2 cycle you're going to have to have a reduction of some kind. Belts are commonly used by the aircraft people for both weight and cost,

mark, he pasted 4 stroke. but i bet it still wants to turn the r's. the slow running killed my bro in-law's centrifical clutch fast. cost him to convert it to electric. mb shop gave him some bad info when he bought the motor, then he had to pay for the convert.

search the ultra lite guys for some ideas about adapting to the crank on the engine.

I have one that I am running on a small airboat with a direct drive belt, at 3.86:1 swinging a 72" prop, I want something I can shift into neutral and not kill the motor.....max rpm is 8900 max torque is at 7000

My bad on missing the 4 cycle. I do see a lot of 3 and 4 cyl snow mobile engines on sand dune buggys and they are clutched. I just never paid any attention as to what the clutch consisted of. A clutch would give neutral without a transmission. I'll go look at my friend's and see how he did it for you.

I'm with ya on the centrifugal clutch, doesn't seem like it would work well. If you get this thing built, there ain't gonna be any mud left for all the other motors to play in!

a guy up here just put a VW motor on a mudbuddy frame with some modification work is it will run 60 mph

I'd look at the set up that is used on a stumpgrinder. My machine is only 35hp, & uses a similar clutch to a stock mm. But they build machines over 100hp. They hafta use something to hold that kind of power.
