Post duralux seems soft
I painted the original coat Wednesday. I painted it outside and let the boat sit outside until dark. It started raining Thursday but I had the boat in the garage... I started adding more coats in the garage. Now today its nice and sunny again so I finally got it out to sit in the sun. It still seems kinda soft. In some spots I can scrape with finger nail. Should I allow it to sit outside more and hope it hardens? Or does it sound like something went wrong...

This was duralux aluminum boat green all prep work done such as sanding washing and drying etc.. I'm hoping its just not all the way dry yet..

I used the regular duralux dead grass green and it took damn near 3 full days for it to fully cure.

You can't paint anything in the rain without trapping moisture. Even epoxies that will cure under water will trap moisture and never get as hard as it could.
At this point you can put it under heat lamps or the sun and try and force cure it. You'll never get it all out but there's still a good chance it will be ok. You'll probably end up with some flatter spots but as time goes on it won't matter as much.

I had the same thing. A week later and I could still scrap it with y nail and if I prees hard it would wrinkle. It was very soft. Just let it sit. She will hardin. Mine took almost two week but after it did its stuck on good. I only waited about an hour or so between coats (dry to the touch) and you are supposed to wait like 4-6 hours. I sprayed it thick so that really didn't help me at all.

I did not paint iny the rain. I painted Wednesday while it was sunny. Then thursday afternoon, but it rained that evening. The boat was in the garage. Applied another coat while in garage. Then it rained about two hours later. I did another coat Saturday and it was sunny all day and sunny Sunday. Let it sit out both days. Seems to be getting hard.

I will try viagra next time. Last time I tried that I couldn't wear gym shorts for two days

I just painted mine a few months ago with Duralux paints, and had the same experience. The humidity and lower temperatures are affecting the cure. I wound up putting about 9 cans of Valspar flat clear to seal it, and it was a huge improvement. The flat clear is only 2 or 3 dollars a can, and well worth the time invested.

I hear see Duralux is very popular on MMT. Do Duralux paints use a catalist? Is it single stage? or base coat top coat?

JeramyDavid,

Duralux is single part with no catalyst. There are two kinds of Duralux which I am aware of that you could use - the aluminum boat paint and the marine enamels.

The Duralux you see mentioned here most often, is Duralux "Aluminum Boat Green". It only comes in one color (unless something has changed recently). It is a "vinyl-type product which exhibits excellent adhesion to aluminum and metal substrates" which means that it does not require primer for use on aluminum. This saves you time and money. In south Louisiana, I find that it fades/chalks pretty fast in the summer sun (but so do the coatings on the factory boats), but if you have it covered during the summer or live further north you probably would be fine. A clear UV sealer like the pro painters use might also help with this but I have not tried it. I switched to a different much more expensive paint for my most recent boat so I will see how they compare given some time.

I have also used their Dead grass green (really a mud brown), and their pirogue green (a brighter green than I like on camo but would probably match green lilly pads ok) which are both marine oil based enamels. These would require an aluminum primer for use on aluminum.

Duralux duck boat drab. 3 coats, waiting till its completely dry between coats. And like stated above, it took about 3 day of me not doing anything to it before it started to really get rock hard.

The only thing that is chipped now after 2 years is the floor and the bow where I hit and pushed stuff. The floor will never stay painted while hunting sandy bottoms. When you walk on it, its like sandpaper. May do turf.

Do most of yall spray or roll? I got my duralux paint in Wednesday and I'm still debating. I've never sprayed before and would prefer to since the finish is better and paint goes further. My concerns are first my compressor isn't large enough it's only a 2 hp 6 gallon and second I'm going to waste more paint learning how to spray than I would save over rolling.

Harbor freight 20oz cup spray gun, = $20. I stenciled my whole boat and motor with the 4oz cup spray gun and a 8 gal air compressor, NO ISSUES. you can do it with the smaller one, it will just take longer and your air compressor will be running ALOT!

I actually went a bought that same spray gun thinking that's how I would do it. That paints not cheap though and I have no clue what I'm doing.

Just get some cardboard and practice, watch some youtube videos, thats what I did. Still have plenty of paint, you will be suprised how much you have left over after you get through.

YUP!! That regulator is the ticket, will help on air control to not over blast your paint and shit! like I said read the directions with the gun and maybe youtube it. Also, get a few of these, will help with keeping moisture out of your paint which makes it splat! http://www.harborfreight.com/disposable ... 68224.html

Spraying is not that hard. I helped my buddy do his and it came out really good. Like was suggested above. Practice on some cardboard to get your settings right.

So I got my duralux in and painted the outside of the boat last Saturday. Well 10 days later I can still scratch it with my finger. Granted it's rained just about everyday but I keep the boat in a garage and even put my dehumidifier in there and it's still seems soft. Does this seem normal? I went with marine enamel not the aluminum boat green paint.

The marine enamel specifies that it's suitable for aluminum. My understanding with the aluminum boat green is that it's a paint plus primer.

I had talked to another guy about painting my boat. Was told to use aluminum paint and to make sure it was sunny for 3-4 days when painting. Told to leave boat in sun so it would cure......

I'm not sure I'll ever get 3 days of sun again.

Shouldn't paint when it's wet outside man. That's your issue. There was a thread a few weeks ago where Frog gave some input on this same issue. Search for it, don't remember what exactly he said, but I know he gave a tip or two.

It was raining or wet when I painted it but started 3 days after I painted and hasn't stopped.

I didn't recall it being more humid than normal we also don't get the humidity the coast gets. But I painted inside with the dehumidifier going so it should have been around 35-40%. Also I rolled it not sprayed.
