Motor problem. Please help
Hi , I am new to forum. Live in New Orleans louisiana , I have a 16/48 alweld flat with a 23hp mud buddy he sport motor ,.. It’s a 2016 with less then 30 hours and it is bogging down only under a load , brought it to lawn mower shop first time , they cleaned Jets I took it out and still bogged down every now and then , brought it back the 2nd time and they did some other stuff to carb ( I believe adjusted float and replaced a valve maybe , so $500 later I take it back out and still bogging down. I talked to the owner he was going to order a $250 carburetor and replace the whole thing and not charge labor costs ( carb has been on back order for over 4 weeks ) my question is do y’all think I should replace whole carburetor. Every tells me it is deff a fuel issues , I ran it with cap on fuel tank open and it still does it , I replaced fuel line and filter , I emptied all the fuel and put all non ethanol , still doing it , what’s y’all thoughts. Thank u. Cody

Most mower shops only use the sonic carb cleaning method. U could easily still have a jet that is smaller than factory with a little gumbo in it. Your in south Louisiana, gotta be a real mudboat mechanic down there somewhere

Thank you. Yeah I’m about to put in a new carburetor, if that doesn’t work then idk where to go from there. The guy said the coils were good and the pushrods were fine

Wondering if you are getting enough fuel maybe needing an Electric fuel pump and or water in the gas. Never run a mudmotor without a a good Water trap on it

Agree with banded, no need for a fuel pump on a carb motor, nor a water separator unless you have a metallic fuel tank that can condensate. You have a clogged jet. You can shoot air or wd40 through the ports also.

Re: Motor problem. Please help
He's not wrong about the water separator. Many of us have not run them for years on our mudmotors and run ethanol gas. I just leave seafoam in every tank and never have a water issue.
The 35 vacuum pump is quite reliable, as is the 23. They don't fail all the time. However, the 23 pump isn't always strong enough for constant full throttle running, but the issues he described start way sooner than the pump just not keeping up. It's a carb issue, and a new carb likely isn't necessary (but would solve his problem. Just getting the gunk out of the jets (a normal problem with small engine carbs) ought to solve his problem.

I think all you guys are on the wrong track here. A 23 hp MM is likely gonna bog down in that size boat with a load and I suspect it has nothing to do with the jets or carb. It's too small a motor for that boat with a load.

Re: Motor problem. Please help
1648 too big for a 23? Ah........ don't thing so. Unless that sucker is made of 3/8 plate. That 23 stock should push that boat with no problem. Alwelds are .100 gauge anyway. Its not the boat.
Bogging is a few things. 1) carb related in some sort or fashion 2) coil issue which is associated to running on 1 cylinder 3) stock carbs are 2 barrels, thus if one jet is plugged, your running on 1 cylinder.
An engine with a plugged jet in 1 cylinder will still bang off the limiter, coils or governor OUT OF WATER. Its when its UNDER LOAD, that it will suffer..................................... why????????????????????????? because under load, torque is needed to turn the engine up. The resistance of water is enough to make the engine bog. Out of water, the resistance of air is nothing. Thus is why a lawnmower mechanic will "sometimes" miss this and the so called cleaning that they do is not enough.

He says it's only bogging down under a load. YES, a 1648 will bog down under a load even with a good 23. Sorry, but you're wrong.

Re: Motor problem. Please help
If it's a B&S 23HP check the oil level. Too much oil will do the same.
