Ive searched til i'm blue in the face and all the info i've found leads me to believe that all the 23's are non cdi. Everybody just talks about adjusting the governor to get more rpm or talking it out and installing a rev box. When I hit 4300 it sounds like i'm on an electronic rev limiter. No surging like its the governor and the arm doesnt actuate. When I had my 35 i pretty much knew what I had or could at least find the info on here. Info for the 23's is few and far between. Do they make 4750 coils for the 23's? Are they the same coils as the 35? |

Stock spinngs? It might be floating the springs, it will sound like a rev limiter |

The pointed lobes on a stock cam float early. Same springs with no shims wil rev higher with an aftermarket cam due to a softer round nose cam. Although the correct springs and shims is politically correct and should be done |

Just to elaborate a few years back i had 35non cdi with a stock cam and fresh heads with new white springs. Motor would free rev to 4200 and i could hear them foating. Ran good for a year and i put a cam in it about midnight one night before heading to lake in am. I didnt swap springs or add shims. Free rev to 4600 before float. I bet your 23 has the older spings////:: and maybe there is a 23 cdi motor,,,, im not sure |

Well come to find out they did make a cdi 23. Special order. Damn go devil. No diodes coming from the coils. And whats worse is its still just a 20 amp cgarger and has to be over 2500 just like a non cdi. Its like somebody ordered this motor and said lets make it as slow as possible so walking back when the battery dies doesnt seem like its taking so long... |

Hell i still dont know for sure that its CDI. From the numbers on the motor it's not. From the fact that the wires coming off the coils dont have diodes its a cdi. It's an odd ball. Not sure if its priceless or worthless but at this point id rather it just be normal lol |

Gabe, I received the engine coding. It is INDEED a CDI digital ignition with a 4350 rev limit. |

If you need to spin it higher I understand. Sometimes these motors are hard to start with added timing and compression due to non cdi. Maybe you can warm up your motor and it still start good. Prop it to 4300.. just a thought |

Yeah i probably will. It starts great as it is. I probably wont actually change the ignition system until its the only limiting factor. I wanna be "Huck fast" and then some. |

Hey fellas. Sorry to revive an old thread. I have a 23 copperhead that I’m gonna put the bps carb kit on and I’m also confused about the cdi vs non cdi. Here’s a picture of my coils. Per bps description it’s non cdi but from what I’ve read on the forums it could be a cdi coil as there is no diode. Also the part number that’s stamped on he coil produces zilch in a parts search. Can somebody who’s in the know run my engine numbers? 3864470084-0084-G1 Thank you |

When I put my engine code into vanguard it shows these are the part numbers for my coils... |

4700 cdi coils off of a 35 fit and work just fine on a 23 |

Funny thing is I just decided to spend a little money on the little motor and went looking for part numbers to change out all the ignition stuff so I’m glad it got revived. Anybody have a good model and type number to order parts from? Last thing I wanna do is order a new flywheel, stator and coils and end up with the stuff I already have. Also does anyone have all the parts laying around to do the swap? |
