i am getting on a lease in sw ar it is basically a deer club BUT has has duck hunting opportunites what I'll be hunting there is flooded timber (green and dead), and a slough water depth 0 to 3ft I sold my bigger boat and got a 6hp beavertail, i was looking at crawfish skiffs maybe a 14x40ish what are your ideas jon boat 14x40ish GD skiff i'll be the only one hunting it so speed won't be a factor BUT stability will thanks guys |

You might get better ideas if you tell folks how you will use it... Will you just ride out and back - will you hunt from the boat - will you be taking several bags of coys too.... Basically what is the game plan - that will dictate your best options.... |

The pointed bow of a skiff would be a plus but it would be built to heavy for a 6hp to push when your dragging bottom. Lite john boat would be your best bet with that hp. |

it will be me and a guest and 18 or less dekes and a dog depending on circumstances most hunting will be wading or permanent blind (if i like the hunting i'll build one), if i went with a jon boat what size, would a 14x40 sumth'n be sufficent?, overkill? thanks |

Before Ike - we had a 14x48 with 8hp longtail - used it to run about 1/4 to 1/2 mile to our blinds with 2 to 3 guys and gear - water was 5 to 6 foot deep but heavy vegitation.... That size rig was perfect for that distance with the small longtail - we usually just idled to get there as quiet as possible - no throttle at all... The larger boat is also nice if you build a blind - has some load carry capacity to haul the wood.... Often packed a fatboy canoe for - stealth attacks and bird retrieves when we were dogless - bigger boat was nice for that too.... |
