For those of you that have a movable winch, how are you supplying power and what receptacle types are you using? I'm planning mounting my winch with a simple rod welded to a plate that can be moved from spud hole to spud hole bow to stern. My original plan was to wire a male trolling motor connector to the winch, beef up my trolling motor supply cable and use the existing trolling motor receptacle for the winch. I really don't know the best way to tackle power to the winch on the stern.

After some research, it appears that the trolling motor receptacles aren't rated for the amperage needed. So.. now I'm just considering making a cable long enough to reach anywhere in the boat. If I go this route, where do I mount the solenoid, circuit breaker, etc..? I'd really like to make this as clean/easy as possible.

I've done some searching and know many of you have been down this road. Any input/suggestions?

I use this. Its overkill for the 3,500lb winch in the boat, but I keep it in my truck tool box and use it for a 10k receiver winch as well.

You can buy just the quick connects. Have a set on the winch, and coming off the solenoid.

I mounted the winch solenoid switch next to the battery and hardwired the cables, switch wire and switch. All of it is located under the foredeck overhang. I used 4ga welder cable with welder quick disconnects (hobart style) on the cable ends and with short leads made up on the winch. The cable and switch circuit are long enough to reach all four corners of the boat. I coil them up together and bungee them to the battery box when not in use, and either store the winch in a spud mount, or put it in one of the storage boxes.

I use the trolling motor plugs as well. The plate I have my winch mounted on has all of the wiring and solenoid mounted on the bottom side. Never had any problems.

And I have gator glide on the bottom!!!

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to try and knock this out this weekend so hopefully all goes well.

On another note, I called Superwinch with a wiring question and surprisingly an actual human answered the phone. He was courteous, knowledgeable and most of all, very helpful. I'm hopeful that I won't ever need them again but so far I'm impressed with their customer service.

Post some pictures of your process if you have time. I have been planning this for a while too.

I use welding cable and a plug in connector I got from the 18 wheeler parts store. it's worked for 5 or 6 years with no problems, and I winch alot.

Could you use a set of quality jumper cables? Seems like an easy option

Very well made and thought out setup. If I were to ever do one for my current rig it'd be just like this.
