2007 GMC 5.3L ... damn oil drip!!! (It's back again, %$#@)
Ok, starting dripping a while back. A few drops every day in driveway. Would get under there and clean it up (not spotless) and the drips would come back. Of course, the internet says the infamous 5.3L main rear seal. I brought it to the local 5 min oil change like I always do and I asked the owner if he wouldn't mind stepping down in the pit and looking for me. Possibly see where its coming from since his worker is draining it anyway. Tols him to check and see if I might have a burr on the filter area (could be leaking from there), or if he say anything. He said it looks like its coiming from above the filter area or higher up. Now, I haven't checked yet, but will when I get home. I haven't pulled the inspection port on the bellhousing to look at the rear main seal. If its wet, then its the rear main. But..... the inspection port is well below where he said it looks like its coming from. Oil pan gasket? My Z71 has 175k on it, but runs like a top other than this damn oil leak. Is there anything else i can check before I'm going to have to take this thing somewhere?

Id may be the oil filter housing/oil cooler gasket.

Ain't getting shit done at work. Ha. been looking all morning and yeah it could be that Oil cooler block gasket. I'm going to have to simple green it all, wipe it down and get an idea of where its coming from. Plus my damn driveway in on a slant, so I'll need to park in in the yard on level ground so I can determine where its coming from.

Re: 2007 GMC 5.3L ....... damn oil drip!!!
If it comes to rear main,, I do the rear engine cover, oilpan and front cover gasket all at the same time. It dosent take much longer than doing the rear main alone. I had customers that had their rear main replaced and it not fixed leak. The gaskets used are aluminum with a rubber ring made onto them. That rubber gets dried out and cracks. The rear cover, pan and front cover all overlap each other is why is easiest to do them all at once. Hopefully it's just the adapter seal or a valvecover.

If it is the rear main, which I'll check port when I get home, how much am I looking at getting it fixed? Cuz my fat ass cant hardly squeeze under there and would prob need a lift.

I’d do exactly what will said. I put a rear main in my 5.3 a couple months ago and it’s still leaking. I should have replaced the cover too but didn’t want to wait on the parts store to get it.

Re: 2007 GMC 5.3L ....... damn oil drip!!!
Well we finally found out where the oil leak was coming from. We used 6 cans of brake cleaner to clean the engine. You can eat off it now. Let it sit over night...... no leak. WTF? With every stop I made, I would leave drops everywhere. We finally found the leak when we started it up. Valve cover. So I went from about $1000 to $120 just like that. Went ahead and bought the new style cover with the PCV port moved to different locatino to help with oil consumption with this active fuel management BS. Should be in today or tomorrow.

the damn leak is back again. Noticed a drop yesterday and looked under. Saw some oil which looks like its coming from the oil pan gasket. I'm going to pull the rock guard off so I can get a better look at it. If it is the oil pan, I have looked all over the damn internet for a Torque sequence and specs for this 5.3 LH6 aluminum block oil pan. So If anyone has pulled the an oil pan, I need the sequence and specs to torque back. I saw online that its a 2 stage torque spec, 1 round at 1 setting, then a final round at another so it doesn't crack.

While you’re doing the oil pan gasket you might as well do the rear main and cover. It’s probably leaking from a here too

Squeezed my big ass under there. Removed the skid plate and rock guard. Definitely the oil pan gasket. But I'm gonna need to get some ramps so I can fit. I pulled the bell housing plug and the rear main was bone dry. Actually had a litrue bit of surface rust. So Im about 100% sure that's not the prob. The real caked up shit was in the back corner where the pan meets the bell housing. I have read that when going back, you need to put some extra permatex there and front corners. I'm too the point, bout to write a check or cash.

Changed oil pan gasket, took about 4 hours to remove all the 4x4 shit out the way to access. So far so good, but only time will tell.
