A few things come to mind:
1. Rent guns- Do not bring them... no matter how much you love your guns.
2. Shells are your number 1 expense. If you want to shoot less, rent O/U guns instead of semi-autos. It is not unrealistic to shoot $1,500 in shells per day. (3000+ rounds per day at $14 a box)
3. Wear a shoulder pad UNDERNEATH your shirt.
4. Bring your appetite. Food is amazing and lots of it.
5. 1,000 doves a day is not hard. Really. You will be a much better shooter when you leave.
6. Your car ride from Cordoba airport to your estancia is 100% negotiable. If they tell you is $x (saw $200 USD+/- pp) amount per person, tell them you'll get your own transportation for less than half that for your group. They will match it.
7. Three days of hunting wears you out... You don't realize how much work it is to hold up a shotgun that much and how much thousands of 20 gauge rounds does to you.
8. The beer is not very good. The red wine is amazing... even if you don't like wine.
9. Time goes fast. The hunt is over before you start.

What does a trip like that run turn-key?

It's like many things... Lot's of ways to do it... Some cheaper than others. Let's do some math for a 3 day hunt at a really great place during the "slow" season (nothing slow about it):

RT Airfare from USA to Cordoba Argentina- $1,100
Visa stamp $110 (good for 10 years)
Same day RT Transfer to the Estancia- $125
Hunt, lodging, meals, drinks, cigars, laundry, etc.- $1,250
Gun rental $150
Tips- $250
Incidentals and meals in transit- $150

That's pretty much it except for shells. All inclusive except shells once you're there.

So shells...

Set a shell budget for the trip and stick to it. Figure $12-$14 a box. You could have a great time taking it easy and shooting 500 shells a day... But then again- you just flew to the bottom of the southern hemisphere for a great trip, so if you wouldn't be happy with a low limit, plan ahead and save a bit more before you go.

If you enjoy shooting birds, please take my advice and go. You won't be disappointed. If it's on your bucket list, remember it's a ultra easy hunt that you can do well into your later years. But if you wait that long, you'll kick yourself for waiting because you'll be planning the next one before you leave Argentina.

Except for shells it makes a reasonable trip... great 4 day there and back excursion.

Why are the shells so damn expensive down there? Can you not bring your own?

You can't bring your own. The government regulations prevent it. The outfitters only make about $1.50 a box. Taxes and regulations are the reason. No one there shoots except foreigners, so they make it a revenue producer.

Good friend of mine is an outfitter down there. His place uses these guns.

The two places I've been to have mostly 20 gauge guns. A few 12s, few 28s, and a couple .410s. The 20 gauge ammo is the cheapest.

The first place I went to was all Benelli montelfeltros for auotloaders, and Browning O/Us. They had a few other gorgeous guns but I didn't look that closely to see what they were.

The second place I went had all Beretta autoloaders and O/Us.

Both places have a guy to load your gun for you and open you beer. One of the places gives you the option of 2 guns or one when you go to the field. Shooting 2 guns, especially autoloaders, gives you the ability to shoot faster. You hand the guy an empty shotgun wit the safety off, and he hands you a full one with the safety on. This is handy if you're going for a high number or trying to break a personal record. You can burn through a box every minute or two. Gets pricey too. If I remember correctly 1 gun was $50 a day rental the second was $20 a day.... so $70 a day for both guns or $50 for one.

There were some ladies there who only shot 200-300 rounds a day.

I know that their seasons are opposite ours. I think they hunt 10-11 months a year, but a couple months are slower if I remember right. I've gone in November and December. Both were the off-season or slow-season, and there was more birds than you could shoot so I can't imaging the high-volume season. I was still able to break 1000 every day I was there. One day I was only a few birds shy of 2000 (that broke the bank... and my shoulder).

Just thought of this since the thread is jogging my mind... I recommend that if you're just doing a quick there and back hunt, you only take a carry-on. They will do your laundry every day so travel clothes and 2 sets of hunting clothes is fine. 2 socks, 2 undies, a toothbrush and you're good. Pack light! If you carry it on there is nothing to lose. I've hunted in both pants and shorts. I light jacket and a T-Shirt are perfect to wear everyday.

Wear the most comfortable shoes you can. Standing for several hours of shooting a couple times a day is hard on your feet.

Bring a GOOD pair of shooting gloves, so you don't get blisters. Seriously, you'll shoot so much you'll get blisters on your hands.

Brin sunglasses.

Is there alternative places that are cheaper where you can bring your own guns and shells to shoot that many doves? Or is Argentina pretty much the apex?

Where else can you shoot over a thousand doves everyday? No where that I know of... There is rarely 10-15 seconds without a dove in range.

Argentina seems liek the apex to me...
