How long does it take...
How long does it take (months) to train a dog to HRCH/MH level. I know every dog is different etc. Im just wondering ball park figures. 24months? more or less?

A LOT also depends on the skill of the person doing the training.

Re: How long does it take...
Every dog is different. Like stated, some dogs will never make it to that level. And some will be there before you know it. My male turned 1 on January 21st and I plan on running Finished this Spring. Might even run a couple Master tests as well. We train every day, twice a day most week days, before and after work. If you put your time in and have a capable dog, you'll be amazed at how fast they can progress.

Re: How long does it take...
I think the most important thing you can do as the owner is not compare your dog's progression with any other dog. Every dog is different. When you start comparing your dog to another dogs level could create serious problems. Pro dog trainers are in a bad situation sometimes. The owner is paying a good bit of money each month for there dog to be progressing. You as the owner expect to see drastic results every time you see your dog. Nothing wrong with that your paying a lot of money but you need to be mindful that every dog is different. In some situations trainers cannot spend the time that really is needed. (i.e. obedience, technical stuff). I have seen numerous dogs get pushed to fast to get to finished level at test. The dog might be able to pass a simple finessed test but start running harder test or AKC test and look bad. A lot of times important steps could be missed or not enough time spent because the trainer has to produce something. I also see a lot of young dogs that start out great but in the end wash out and have major issues. Pushed too hard and fast. Takes a special dog. You might go through 20 30 pups before you find a pup that might can produce as a field trial dog. Just remember that it is not a contest to see how young your dog is when it gets it titles. HRCH or MH is the same title no matter the age. Best of luck.

Re: How long does it take...
The majority of dogs from average breeding won't ever make it to field champion regardless of training. They have to have the natural ability and then someone capable of getting it out of them.

Re: How long does it take...
Depends , first off , less say you've bought a high end dog with the best of genetics . If you have the background to train the dog , that would be a big plus . Now time and money is a factor , alot of traveling is required . Hope you don't have kids , wife won't go for you being gone every other weekend for hunt test , and spending all that money to get a title for a dog . But , if you didn't have a family , and had the money and time with a well bred dog , could be done within 24 months with everything falling in place with no road blocks . That's my spin on it

Re: How long does it take...
The average age of a dog that is passing a Master level test on a regular basis is 3-4 years old.

Re: How long does it take...
Mines been with a pro since 5 months old. Came back for duck season then went back to pro. total of 12 months pro training and she will be running HRC finished next month. Will be a MH at age 2. Not cheap but done right and will be breeding and getting some money back it return! Nothing better Than a good dog.
