I have a bone stock pd 32 thats been running like shit and now doesn't start at all. It would spit and sputter and die at wot then start hard and run like crap again. it would run with minimal missing in the driveway but under load in the water it dies.checked and cleaned carb and it seems good to go. put new plugs in and checked spark. There seems to be spark but i noticed the test light is much dimmer when hooked up between the plug and wire than if i grounded it to the block.also checked fuel filters and for air leaks in the fuel line and it all looks good too. I pulled the valve covers and checked valves and those check out also. so i think i covered the basics but cant figure it out. any pointers would be much appreciated. thanks.

Could be your diodes? Are you getting good spark on both cylinders?

How old is the fuel you may have water in it.

its fresh 91 in the tank. so the gas should be ok. Where would i find the diodes and how do i test them. The spark seems weak on both cylinders.

Compression check is also needed

a test light is not a good way of testing spark. go buy a spark tester. try misting your carb with some carb cleaner. not a direct spray just a mist if it trys to start i would think that you have a dirty carb which than you will need to do a complete cleaning. you can test diodes with a volt ohm meter that has a diode test feature. but thats not your problem just my thoughts.

Diodes are on the wiring harness going to the coils- its the control wire that grounds the coils when key is turned off or kill switch is pulled. When a diode fails, that coil will not fire. I agree that the wiring harness is probably not your problem.

make sure ur choke isn't stuck in the on postion too!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. A repair guy nearby said that an electric fuel pump is the way to go so maybe thats the problem. Thanks

Runs like a champ now. Turns out it was a wire between the coils that had rubbed bare. bad placement from factory. I just cut out the bad section and pieced in a new one. good as new. Hopefully this helps out someone if you ever have the same kind of problem. Thanks again everyone.
