Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
your pictures are horrible.
No idea what you are trying to show us, so there is no way to suggest what could have happened.
Strictly from your brief description, I would first guess that the gun was not cleaned properly after a weekend of shooting.

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
Sounds like to me that the live round was not fully chambered. Kinda half way in and half way out. Usually results of a dirty gun/dirty ammo. Just guessing. Glad your O.K. My story was similiar but I lost my left eye Randy

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
It's called an out of battery fire. That's when the cartridge fires when not fully in the chamber. Most likley caused by the magazine not being properly seated.

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
Was there also a normaly fired round? Usually when a out of battery fire occurs in a semi auto rimfire. It's after a round fires and the bolt tries to strip the new round from the improperly seated mag, it strikes the rim and fires the round out of the chamber.

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
Ya might want to check the 597 out too. Remington has recalled all the .17 HMR 597 because of some malfunction.
Not sure on the .22 mag but might be worth checkin into.

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
seriously... if there's a hole in the back of the brass like that, I would think the only way that would happen was if the bolt wasn't closed all the way at the time the firing pin hit the primer. is it a bolt action or an automatic?

Re: possible gun or bullet malfunction?~!?!?
is there any split's in the case wall? (side of the case) I am leaning toward a overcharged shell or obstruction of the bore? I believe there was a industry wide recall on a.17hmr autoloader's for some reason or another? might have been pressure related problem's
