Post Motor Charging
I have added a 2 way perko battery switch to my motor. It doesn't seem like it is charging the batteries. How can I measure the voltage to tell or what do i do to tell if the motor is charging the batteries.

check battery voltage on whichever battery you have selected, then start ur engine and check the voltage again at idle & at wide open throttle.

As I understand it, charging on these motors doesn't begin until about 2200-2400 rpm. When froggin for 5 or 6 hours, with headlight connected to starting battery, I need to change battery. Only running 11-1500 while froggin.

Post Re: Motor Charging
i think my motor is not chargeing the battery, went froging last night an from useing the trim , stopping starting the motor all night the battrey went dead, got home an charged the battrey motor starts right up ,put a meter on it while motor was stoped an while motor running at high r.p.m.s volts were the same no change. an we did not run the spotlight on that battrey its just for the motor. so the chargeing system must be crap out.is there another way to test the chargeing system

looks like its the voltage regulator, the stator tested all right, test the voltage regulator at the red wire voltage was 12v an as i would speed the motor up volts go up an down but under 12 volts so i think it may be the regulator, the wire plug on the regultor side was black an a little burnt.

Post Re: Motor Charging
that happens, don't know exactly what causes it but seen a few burnt plug connections. You may try cleaning the connection with some electraclean or something... it could just be the bad connection.

BTW, it has to be plugged back in to check the DC coming from the rectifier (red wire). Just re-read my post & I didn't really make that clear. The rectifier converts the AC voltage coming from the stator to a regulated DC voltage output.... if it's not plugged in there's no AC input, no DC output. You'll still read DC voltage, but that would be coming from the bat-tree. With it plugged in you can punch through the insulation on the red wire with the positive meter probe, and ground the negative meter probe to the engine block to get your reading.

Another tip for anyone who finds everything to be working, but still not charging at the bat-tree. The red wire coming from the rectifier is routed through another wiring harness & then through the key switch I believe. Re-route it directly to the post on the starter where the positive battery cable connects. You'll eliminate a bunch of unecessary connections and get a better charge.

i gone try an clean the plug with electric clean,if the dam wire weren't so short comeing from the stator i would splice them together but it would take some baby hands to splice them

I hear ya... every time I got my engine apart I say I'm gonna extend those wires and solder/splice it all together with a little extra slack for future repairs. Then I always get in a hurry to get it back together & forget. lol

Video cameras were standard issue 5 or 6 yrs ago when this shit impressed me... the novelty has since wore off and not much inspires me to remember the camera these days. lol

not to mention I still haven't mastered the art of drivin, grabbin frogs on step by myself, & operatin a video camera at da same time..... plus, why in da hell would I devulge my secrets and increase my competition??? lol

I'll tell you one thing though... that Manchac is loaded with frogs! BIG FROGS!

OK< just got back for Florida and tried the regulator, i'm getting 30 vac out of the stator but nothing out of the regulator, the voltage drops. I guess I have to call Chops at SETX and get one, plus the clutch that has been giving me problems.

I had the exact burn of the red wire connector 2 and just direct connected the two red wires. Fixed da problem for a few years.

Frogs in manchac, what you talking bout willis?
