I know I'll regret this, and I'm sure ya'll see it too often
but what is the difference between engines? I imagine this is a ford/chevy argument but oh well...
I know there are Gator tails, Go devils, and Mud buddies...
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
I'll be running a 20' X 5' boat mainly coastal gigging and some river running.

#1 Test drive them all if you can. I didn't, but I bought based on my #4 criteria mainly.
#2 Buy local unless you like long drives to have your motor worked on. They can also ship you the parts and you can do the work yourself.
#3 If you must have reverse, you will be choosing between a Gatortail or Pro-drive(Huggins in Albany is a Pro-Drive dealer).
#4 If you want power tilt and trim, you will be looking at GT, PD or MB.
#4 If you want the motor with the least number of moving parts, thats a Go-Devil
#5 There is very little difference in price so that's one thing you don't have to consider.

All the engines are Vanguard or Kohler engines either in a Horizontal or vertical shaft configuration.

x2 on all that was said in the last posts.
But also remember, the motor is just 1/2 of what makes a good mud rig. Is this 20 ft boat setup and designed for mud running????? You could spend all the money in the world on a new motor and hang it on a boat not designed for it and not be satisfied.
my .02

I'm talking with uncleJ about building a rig. I assume what he builds are solely for mud motors.

Then with that said, as the other guy said. With a 20 foot boat, go all out and put either dual GT or dual PD on the back of it and you will have a beast.
