ive got a 36 PD and after i ran it for a while the other day the prop disengaged and it shut off. i looked at it and the starter fuse was blown i replaced it started it up and now every time I try to engage the prop it blows the starter fuse... any suggestions

sounds like der is a short sumwhere.

I would try a heavier fuse and ifin' it keeps blowin' .... I would intall a jumper wire. Thats 'bout all I knows 'bout electric .......

Don't do that!!!!! You have a short somewhere for sure. You can open up the lil switch box where the pto switch is and make sure none of the terminals are rubbing. Also check the wires going into the clutch. Hopefully it's not a problem inside the clutch and a lil electrical tape can get you back up and running.

ive looked inside the starter box and it doesnt look like there is any wires rubbing or loose. how big is the fuse suppose to be...

Ok, I'm not a PD guy, so I could be way off here. I had the same problem with my MB awhile back and it was a loose wire on my clutch. I was under the impession that the PD used a mechanical clutch like a PTO, but isn't there also a "bump" switch for momentary operation?
With mine, it just died while we were runnin. Started right up and ran fine, until I'd put it in gear or bump the momentary switch. I found & fixed a loose wire and no more problems. Good luck with it, tracing these out can sometimes be a PIA.

Ran into the same while running with some PDs- it was a short. After digging through all the boats there and finally finding a glass fuse we all agreed he should cut out that fuse holder and install a waterproof blade type holder. If this ever happens, it will be alot easier to find blade type fuses from another boat if you don't have spares or burn all yours.

I bet its the clutch that shorted out.

Same thing happened to my 27 2 times.

Clutch burnt up and was shorting out.

Everytime I tried to engage clutch it would pop the fuse.

doesn't seem like your starter fuse by what you are saying.

if you will do a search on here, you will find some threads about a short in some clutch wires. It can get pinched and it will cause it to short out.

Sounds to me like that is what going on since it only blows when you engage the pto.

A call to KP or Peck at prodrive would be a good start for you. they know there stuff and are extemely helpful.

The "starter" fuse he is talking about is really the 12v lead from the battery. Its connected to the starter but it feeds power to everything on the motor. So I'm guessing anything connected on the same terminal of the starter that shorts out could blow that fuse. I'm guessing its either the wires going to the clutch or its internal on the clutch. The latter is bad news. Not that bad, but means your gonna need a new clutch.

Go through again and thouroughly check ALL the wiring. Inside the switch box, everywhere on the motor, remove the vinyl cover on the clutch and check all wiring in there. I would start where the battery cable connects to the starter and trace the other wires that are connected there. If you have a volt meter with a continuity tester and know how to use it, that would be the easiest way to check all the wires.

Easiest way to figure out if its the clutch is to just unplug it. Pull the PTO button and if the fuse dont blow you found your problem.

thanks guys I looked at those other posts and found the one about the wires to the clutch and i think that might be whats up. now it has burnt up my pto switch too so i got to replace that now. hope i dont need a new clutch...
