 Valve adjustment question
I've got a 35 GDSD with about 200 hours on her. To my knowledge, the valves have never need adjusted. I'm trying go find out if the 35 vanguard had adjustable valves or do I need shims to adjust them? I've noticed that lately it's been a little harder to start my motor and a little bit of black smoke out of the exhaust when I do start it up. It usually gets worse once the motor is hot after running for a while.
Am I correct in thinking that a valve adjustment would help use issues?

 Re: Valve adjustment question
Pull your valve covers off and set dem at 0.005 while at a 1/4" past top dead center.

 Re: Valve adjustment question
Well, adjusted my valves this afternoon. Really easy job. But I did find a new problem while doing so. Went ahead and checked compression and I'm WAY low on each cylinder. 82 on one side, 86 on the other. I really could have done without this. Oh well, time to start looking for parts.

 Re: Valve adjustment question
No, didn't open the throttle. Guess I'll have to check it again.

 Re: Valve adjustment question
Without the throttle open the intake is basicly a closed valve cutting off your air supply. No air means your not going to get the air needed to displace / fill the cylinder, causing the piston to draw some what of a vaccum until it can compress what air that it had or what it could actually suck in. Is that right BJG?

 Re: Valve adjustment question
either that or u set the valves to loose. But i dont think thats the case. They would have to be really loose.
