Post heads with or without roller rockers
I am buying a Gatortail 35 and am putting it on a 17 ft uncle j that's gona b heavy. I am planning on putting a Marsh mellow exhaust, mikuni, and iron mountain heads. Should I put roller rockers and push rods with it or will I be fine leaving them stock? Other suggestions?

Its fine to leave them stock, but not a bad idea to add them if you can afford to. Some guys do like the stock push rods though, because they fail before other parts and are cheap to replace.

another thing to break.... you loose the roller and it becomes a fork that has a potential to take a spring out then the valve goes smack.... no personal experience just heard of it happenen

Do you need them if running a cam?

stock rollers with the right ratio no matter what ya run... modded or not... the more that move the more that wears the more that breaks... if ya can eliminate a moving part do it.... aint not HP gain with them like there are on V8s... be it even very mild on those

There are advantages to roller rockers-
-Larger rocker ratio = more valve-lift (I read the stock rockers have a 1:1.33 ratio, most of the rollers offered are 1:1.5 and I bet the rollers are more accurate in the measurement than the stamped metal ones)
-Opens the valve quicker and closes it slightly later than stock giving a lttile better accelleration
-More accurate valve timing
-Less friction and heat
-Less wear on the valve guides/valve as the rocker tip rolls across the valve tip vs. being dragged across it with the stock rocker arms

I ran stock rockers and rods on my old motor (heads decked 0.060)- worked really well for >120 hours.

They can really compliment a cam, its just a question of HP gain for the $$'s A set of rockers and push rods are ~$400. Compared with the gains from heads or a cam (in the same ballpark on price) I don't think they give the same amount of gain. However if you want to squeeze every HP out of the motor they will help. Just up to you and what you can afford.

Post Re: heads with or without roller rockers
im doing stage II heads with mikuni and exhaust as we speak...i decided to do the rollers, double springs and pushrods because i didnt like the idea of having to shim the valves. But thats just how i am i usually go overboard on things and try and get the best parts....and if i ever want to throw a cam in er i will already have the parts to do it.

If you want to do something else, go for the double springs. From my experiences with motors weak springs will rob power ...the double springs will last longer and hold the pressure better over the years vs the stock shimmed single. So if i were you i would atleast get the double springs. You certainly dont NEED them but after ahwile the stock springs will lose strength and cause it to close the valve a little sooner thus loosing power and you probably wont even notice it much.

hard to beleive spring pressure could break a cam but i'll take your word on that....im basing it off my knowledge of building performance motors for muscle cars and from what i have experienced...found out that edelbrock springs are junk and wont hold pressure for long term relaibility...anyway this is my first time dealing with these so im learning....everythings a hell of alot smaller.

Now im worried about running double springs and roller rockers...oh well.....we'll see what happens i guess
