 Copperhead 6.5
I finally got to head to Covington to go get my motor. Keep in mind, I put this on a 1436 older jon boat. People at Copperhead are nice, easy to deal with and will answer any question you have. About the motor. Copperhead 6.5hp 208cc SD Craftsmanship is nice and clean. Engine is easy to start. Very light at 80lbs. Small enough to put inside an SUV. Drive system is stout and can handle jsut about any motor under 14 with a few modifications. I got a chance to run it on my boat on Thursday in St Louis Canal right by my house. The boat & motor are so light, me and my son just pushed it off the trailer and placed it in the water. No need to back a trailer in the water. With me(165lbs), my son(130ish lbs) and my lab(45lbs), I think we hit 16-18mph for a little bit. I don't have a GPS, so I'm guesstimating. I plan to get/borrow wa GPS and get hard numbers. I did find some grass/lillies and ran right through them with no issues. I hope to give a better review of this motor once everything is finished with the boat.
If you are in the market for a small SD mudmotor(I really didn't want a longtail), I suggest checking out the Copperhead 6.5.
Also if this post doesn't adhere to forum rules, let me know and delete it.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
I'm thinking of getting one in the future. I got some creeks up here that I need to drop off on some 10+ high banks with no access. Would be ideal....

Poker, I'm sure that was Gil and his crew. He told me he went down there.
I 'like it, hopefully it will last and I get good results from it.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Man that would be awesome if you could, also about how much do them things run if you don't mind me asking, just send a PM if you'd like. That motor would work out great for the refuges and it would be cost effective for me!

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Man I want one of those so bad for my Momarsh layout
As far as running in the shallows they have some video on YouTube just search copperhead and they will pull up
As far as the people there they are some cool guys, I haven't been over there in a Weil but he has been around for a long time dealling with all mud motors So if and when I buy one I bet it last,
Also look at the motors we have on our boats and look at the hp some of us are putting out , then look at the copperhead a little 6 hp with almost the same set up so I think you could do just about any thing to it and it would be hard to break

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Look at how beefy that things is built too, the hanging bracket and swivel looks heavy enough to hang a 35 on it. I think these boys have a good thing brewing, I see a lot more from them in the future.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
I think they could do good specializing in small motors, like offer a 6.5 through 23 where most brands smallest is a 23 or 27. I could see alot of people buying them. I do think that little motor prolly doesnt have a very large gear reduction since it is going so fast.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
I could be wrong, but I think there is a law suit about that motor. The proto type plans were stolen from a former employee of one shop, moved to LA and started to build at his new shop. Not sure if it is the same motor, but it looks just like it!!

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
I am not 100%, this could be a slightly different design- but I can tell you the prototype I have seen looks identical The guy who designed it, didn't have the money to put in production, and was still testing it. Several months later after his employee took off with the plans he saw the motor being advertised. Law suit pending, but i was under the impression he had cease and desist order. So I am not sure this is it or not. I will find out.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
I aint got a dog in that fight, but if the guy didn't have the $$ to put it into production, he probably never applied for the patent either. Let's just say hypothetically that the employee took the idea and ran with it. If the other guy never patented it or put it into production, then it was just an IDEA, not a product. I'm not sayin it's right, but it's no different than me comin up with an idea for a new style of grab bar, and somebody else mass producing them before I can come up with the funds to do so myself. Sucks for me, but legally the other guy didn't do anything wrong.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Sounds like this situation has been resolved... Like i said I do not have a dog in this fight, but if the story i had heard was true the members should know before you plunk down your hard earned cash! BUT, there are always two sides to every story! It is good to know this little motor is finally available, b/c it is a nice little motor. Especially for the hp restricted areas!

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
We have one up here at the Phowler Shop right now, working on a boat design to match the motor. I have two new hull designs drawn up that we will be trying out this winter, gonna try and get a nice little hull that will carry two men and gear matched to the motor. Will let you know how the prototypes run when we get them finished.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Had a chance to go ride this weekend with my brother and son. Found some shallow water too. 3 people - 450ish Deep water, slow 8-10mph. Found 4-6 inches of water, 13-15mph. My hull is only 36"btm so I'll draft more water. I'd say something in a 42"-46" bottom 14' long would be better. Still no GPS numbers yet. Hopefully I can get one soon and get a better idea of the speed.

Copyright infringement!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to GPS the thing cause I'm bettin you aren't gettin the numbers you think you are. It'll be a dog in the mud too, unless you can get it on a decent hull.

 Re: Copperhead 6.5
Is it a sub surface prop like on a longtail or is it a very small surface piercing prop? Can't really tell from the pictures.

When I looked at their website, it does appear to be a surface piercing prop. Sorry. Not everyone understands the difference.
