 Random acts of kindness
So me, the wife, and the 11 month old baby girl are sitting in IHOP sunday morning after church finishing up our lunch. Up walks this guy thats in his 50's or so and preceeds to tell how beautiful our little girl is. So I'm thinking to myself, who hell is this weirdo coming up to talk to complete strangers and tell us how cute our girl is as he has his hand on my shoulder while talking to us. He then introduces himself and I cant remember his name but he was from Illinois, and he says my wife and I like to do this from time to time and he slips me a 20$ bill and says don't take this the wrong way, but I want to pay for your lunch. He says God bless you and walks out of the restaurant.
Anything similar happen to any of yall? I was kinda put off at first about it but then realized that it was just a really good guy that wanted to do something nice for someone.

 Re: Random acts of kindness
Never had anything nice like that happen, but once at the State Line Bar in Waskom, TX. a guy named Darl bought the house a round. That was pretty nice

 Re: Random acts of kindness
It's a sign of the times when kindness is weird. I probably would have told him to get his f-ing hand off my shoulder and get away form my kid. I'm an a$$hole though.

 Re: Random acts of kindness
There have been several times I have been in resturants and notice armed forces eating in the resturant and had the waiter bring me there checks. The least that I can do for people fighting for our feedom.

 Re: Random acts of kindness
Yep, it's karma. My wife went to the store in Loreauville and there was a young girl in front of her in line checking out. She had just a few items like bread, milk, eggs. Her card was declined and she was embarrassed and got on the phone to call her mom. My wife could actually hear her mom telling her she thought she had enough money in her account and to put some stuff back. By this time there's a pretty good line forming behind and my wife tells the cashier to put it on her card, it was under $10. The girl told my wife to please give her the phone number and address and her mom would pay her back. My wife just told her not to worry about it and do the same to someone else someday. When the wife got home she was afraid to tell me what happened (because I'm a mean mutherf'er and a baddass to boot ). I told her of course I wasn't mad or anything. Now had the girl had cigarettes or beer or other bullshit, that would have been another story, but the wife wouldn't have done that for her if that were the case. Told the wife that it was a good thing she did and that our little business was doing good and that God would see that and bless us, and he has. I believe in helping people when I can, but there are so many folks who just want to loaf around and expect everyone else to do for them. I've been self employed most of my adult life and know how it is to struggle. There were times my wife and I ate a can of corn for supper, or trips to the grocery store with ten dollars to get what you could. Things are better now and God has blessed us with a job I love and now, instead of eating just one can of corn, we can now each have our own can. Life is good Karma folks, ya do something good and you get it back.

 Re: Random acts of kindness
Thats cool. Had someone do it to me once. I have bought a few meals for military folks at times. I just pay and leave without saying anything to them. They sacrifice enough for the little pay they get, especially the younger couples. I been in their shoes before. And I occassionally offer to buy some down on their luck folks meals. Usually you get the "well I was gonna eat later" which means they gonna buy booze though so its the food or nothing. I aint supporting no wine heads..... With the exception of the old wine head "aka Alleycat" that I used to arrest on a monthly basis. I'd hook him up and then drive through What-A-Burger on the way to the jail and get him a burger. It was kinda funny when I would pay and then tell the server to hand it to the dude in the back seat...........

 Re: Random acts of kindness
I've got four children under the age of twelve. On a half dozen occasions, older couples have stopped by our table to compliment the children. I guess it is very nice, but I'm not a big fan of having my space invaded, or our meal interrupted, no matter how gracious the compliments.
With regard to the offer of money, I've never had that happen. If it did, I would as politely as possible tell him to give it to St. Judes Children's Hospital or the Red Cross or something, but never take it.
With regard to the hand on the shoulder, your first impression is the right impression...it isn't quite right. Unless he is kin, never let another grown man touch you while you are sitting! Even if he is a friend, you want to be on your feet whenever another grown man enters your private space. If the encounter proves to be friendly, then you've just shown good manners, he can look you in the eye and shake your hand, instead of palming your shoulder. If the encounter is malicious, you will either deter it or be ready for it.
Poker 1 and TonyB's examples are different. No personal space issues, no perceived requirement for gratitude. A kind gesture was made, no fanfare necessary. Your guy could have easily slipped that money to your waitress, but he chose to bask in your forced gratitude.

There was an old man that won 100 somthing million and his wife passed away and he said that he coudnt spend it all and would do like you said give alittle to nice people like your self or he would pay people electric bill and so own,
just goes to show that there are still some generous people out there even if you wernt asking or hinting for it

none the less you still got 20.00 bucks for a hand on your shoulder and just having a conversation wit him

I ussually will not help sumone if I know they are gonna use it on alcohol or cigarettes. But der was one man in which I did buy him sumthin to eat, a bottle of booze and a pack of cigs. It is a long story on how we met. But he was awarded da Silver Star for Valor. So I figured he has earned da right to be a drunk bum if dat's what he chooses to be.

 Re: Random acts of kindness
A couple of us were eating at a diner that we frequent one day after church. When it was time to pay the waitress informed us that our bill was covered and handed us a card. The card has a message on it the said something along the lines of something nice was done for you so do something nice for someone else. (kinda like a chain gesture) So with that we payed for another couples meal. A few days later I went back for lunch and the waitress said that card was passed on fir the rest of the day. I thought that was pretty neat myself.
