Post Headers
I know this ain't chevytalk.com or something but I am just gonna say never put headers on a street truck or car. I put a set of block huggers on my blazer because I have a pto winch on it and I have had nothing but trouble with the since I bought them. First they kept hitting the motor mounts before I put the motor in and then I put the motor in and the were hittin the frame rail. Then I get it runnin and the bold come loose that bolt them to the heads. Then where they bolt to my exhaust at the donut gasket. Then blew a header gasket then the bolts came loose on the other side the bolts come loose from the donut gasket again! I hate them and they are definatly not worth 5-8 horsepower! My advice is to make that up with a air filter or carb!

Just had to vent!!

I have worked on alot of race cars and drag trucks and that is one of the main problems out of headers is the bolts backing out and gaskets always leaking. Getting a good carb and a good dry air filter they will make a night and day difference.

Post Re: Headers
Whenever I was in high school I had an old ford 4x4 that the exaust manifold cracked on, and since I was 17 I thought that the louder the truck the better. So I took off the cadillic converter and put on headers worst mistake I ever did to that truck. I ended up changing gaskets about every 6 months and where the headers met the exaust pipe was a constant battle because the bolts were always vibrating loose and falling out. Not to mention the top end I lost when I got rid of all the back pressure. Now the truck would pull like crazy in low gears but it became a dud in high gears especially when I had a trailer hooked to it.

Buy quality headers AND use some lock tite and you wont have ANY trouble

I had a set of headers on my last truck for 50k and never had one issue

Also if they are hitting on the motor mount you dont have the right ones for ya vehicle

They are the right ones. Buddy of mine that owns a muffler shop said they always had that problem with bock huggers. And they make locking header bolts that are about 60 bucks I am probably gonna buy. But will never buy another set of them!

Block huggers are ya problem. Get some long tubes and be done with it. Yes the shitty ass stock manifolds dont flow that great, but if you aint gonna spend the time and effort to do long tubes I would mess with headers at all.

I did buy the best. Everything in that motor is the best money can buy. And I had to get block huggers because I have a pto winch and the shaft runs right in the way of where the long tubes run. I was sol on this! But she's runnin like a scaulded ape right now so I can't bitch too much!

And never put flowmasters on a truck with headers and no cats! Sounds like crap! Go with glass packs!!

flowmaster is the worst muffler for any vehichle. They dont flow worth a phuck... Glasspacks are just Dumb too. they have too much of a poppiness to them because of the louvers inside them. Race bullets mimmick glasspacks but do not have the louvers. They are cheap, and flows the most out of any application muffler.

...or build your own like my dad has for years. He used stainless pipe, stainless rods and a Lincoln tombstone to build these along with many sawzall/hacksaw blades. And a collector form he made about twenty five years ago.

He made these for his El camino.

I have a set of shorty headers on a trans am. I use the header bolts that have the allen screw in the middle of the bolt. Tighten the header bolt up then the allen screw and no problems they will not back out!
