 Re: Your Job
I am a engineer offshore on a supply boat. You could start off as a deck hand making about $185.00 a day, get 90 days seatime, take a test and make $270.00 a day. Don't know if anyone is doing any hiring right now. Everything seems kind of slow.

Diesel technician "thats a pretty word for mechanic" for Cummins Mid South in the high horse power marine field. Pay his damn good. Takes a few years to get that way but its not to bad.
In my opinion go be a lawyer, no matter if your client goes free or goes up you gonna get paid.

 Re: Your Job
All joking aside. When you start looking, things like 401k, vacation, medical BENIFITS are huge. If I was in your position I would look into something in the peto or off shore oil field that is stable. There are plenty of guys on this site that can point you in the right direction. Also and this may sound like total bullshit but having a degree (which is good) will not get you a good job. Don't be affraid to go to work or start a trade pipefitter, welder, elect., etc.. Alot of these guys have gone to school of hard knocks and done an ass load of on the job training to get good well paying jobs, plus alot of the time these companies will send you to there own private training/schools to learn and get certified on certain things. And when you get into that field you really start to develope a network of friends and contacts that you'll use your whole career. I know it's alot of info, but good luck and don't be affraid to travel your young.

 Re: Your Job
Tool and Die maker for 27 years, but even the die trade is getting hit hard these days. There are a bunch of die makers out of work here in the mid West. But i'm still hard at it. I had intensions of retiring from this trade, but now I just don't know! Sounds like the petro field is where you outta be, so load up the truck and move to Beverly. Hills Texas that is! Good luck in the future, keep your head up, and do some investigating as to which field best suits you. Electrictions and plumbers make great wages, if you can get on with a good company, go through there apprentiship program and learn the trade. Good luck Smoke

 Re: Your Job
Go to college, party hard but not hard enough to fail out. Employers dont care about your grades, just how you can communicate with people. I partied my ass off in college, graduated in four and a half years, had a part-time job with copenhagen and still managed to hunt, fish, and ride horses whenever i wanted. Now I have a great job with Farm Bureau Insurance, making great salary and my own hours. Just remember that college will broaden your life and make memories you will never forget. Just don't catch anything that can't be cured by penecillin. You realize very quick after graduation that the real world sucks and you would do anything to go back to college and sleep all day and party at night. and its not what you know, it who you know and how well you can bullchit.

 Re: Your Job
Man there's so many ways to go. Get a job or be your own boss. It all depends on your tolerance level to labor, stress and anxiety. And the economy.
Figure what you love the most in your short life so far, and start with that.
What you'd want to do every friggin day of the year for the next 55 if your lucky.
Happiness aint boats and jet skis. Drinking with the boys or whores.
Figure what your really good at and love. Move to the place you'd love to live and be happy.
Your biggest problem aint what or where but with who.
Your 20.....you want the strange.....at 20 most every hottie is hot. So put off marriage till your 27.
Good luck and remember one thing....what the eye sees it covets. Don't covet just yet. Your not wise enough to ponder what makes a man happy.

 Re: Your Job
Go into the medical field...you cant go wrong here.
Nursing jobs arent just for women anymore.
Go get your BSN....then your MSN. The sky is the limit then.
Just startng out with your BSN you can make $40+/hour...it only goes up from there.
there is a shortage in nurses now, and there will always be a demand for them.
Whatever you decide, go to school. That piece of paper might not get you rich a year after college, but it will open doors in the future that would otherwise stay closed.

 Re: Your Job
All this sounds nice but have you given a thought to doing nothing and simply leeching off those of us who do?
A good portion of the population gets by this way.
When you do end up getting a good job with good pay which I'm sure you will, you will end up hating that portion of the population that is now living off YOU..........And that's OK.

 Re: Your Job
If you are able, I would reccomend going to college. Just remember college isn't for everyone. I was able to go to college and am now a computer programmer analyst. I have been out of school for 3 years and make more money than my dad and he has been at his job for over 20 years.
Sounds like there are a few people on this board from East Texas, I graduated from UT Tyler.

 Re: Your Job
Go in the National Guard. In LA they will pay all of your college tuition I don't know about TX. Even if you don't need the money for school you need the time in the military. It will help you to grow up in more ways than I can tell you and it's a great time. (Where else do you get to shoot stuff and get paid for it?) I was in the USMC. Knowing what I know now I'd have gone National Guard. Then when you get home from basic, AIT etc. go to college and have a blast. These next few years will be the best of your life. I have a business degree I completed nights and weekends while in the service and it has helped me in ways I couldn't have imagined both personally and professionally. That piece of paper is way more than just a piece of paper no matter what anyone says. My oldest son went National Guard. Got a big bonus saved money while at school became an EMT came home got a good job as a EMT on an ambulance then got hired with Halliburton. Now he owns his car outright and just bought his own house he is only 20. Good luck in whatever you do.

 Re: Your Job
Im with slambin and texman. You can't go wrong with college as long as you take advantage of the opportunity. Not only do you make friends for the rest of your life, but you can make some great connections as far as job opportunities go. Im also in the insurance business, and love what I do. Its always good to know that the position you are in can be controlled by how hard you decide to work.
