2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
I was surprised with a problem today. My engine started up just fine at the house and when I trailered it for a bit, it would no longer start. Lately the starter has been clicking at times and starts rather poorly in my opinion. I have read a bunch of search files on here and I can rule out some things. I have tried checking the power to and from the switch. It is good. The voltage going in is pretty much the same as it is going out. Where the power goes back into the solenoid, when I turn the key it sends the power into the solenoid where I have tested in and I get 12.87 volts. I have tried arching the posts on it and there are some sparks but it will not go. Every once in a while when I turn the key I can get a couple clicks out of it, but nothing more. Anyone have or seen the same problem that I am experiencing. Can just the solenoid be bad and the starter still be good? How can I test it further? It would be nice to be able to pinpoint the problem, so I can get the correct fix. Thanks in advance.

Had the same problem. Ground problem. Took the ground wire off the back of the front plate on the motor. Cleaned it up and put it back. No more problem.

If it clicks, I believe the solenoid is working...If you have ruled out the obvious, wiring and what not, I'd say it's time for a new starter. We got one off ebay for like a hundred bucks...

If it is a Steering Model, I have noticed that the wire going to the starter is a bit smaller than what it should be. With that said, it will sometimes work, but sometimes not.
If it is a Tiller Model, then take a screwdriver and touch both sides the solenoid. If it cranks over, then you need a new Solenoid..

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
I have reconnected the ground and tried moving it around and I get the same response. I have good voltage running through to the solenoid and every once in a while I can get it to click, but that is it. I have discovered something else though, My revlimiter box clicks every time I turn the key. Could this be the culprit? Would I need a new fuse? Looking for any information that you guys have that you maybe have ran into in the past.

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
The rev limiter could possibly keep you from getting spark, but should not keep the starter from turning. If you have voltage at the solenoid, then it's not a fuse issue. When the solenoid "clicks", does the starter turn? If not, the starter is locked up. From what you are typing, it sounds like the solenoid was functioning properly. Your more recent post are saying that it only clicks sometimes... Try removing the starter and putting voltage to it off the motor....See if the solenoid opens, and if the starter spins. If it don't spin, tap the wheel a little with a hammer. I'm still thinking you need a new starter. If all your wiring is good, and it were me, I would not hesitate to replace it. You may get it to fire a few more times, but it sure would suck for it to completely give out while ur several miles from the ramp. This would be worst case scenario, but not out of the question on a stage 3 motor. Have you tried engaging the clutch and turning the prop? If you have access to the flywheel, you can spin it from there. Does it turn freely? Sure hope it does... I'm thinking its just a bad starter. And J, it's okay, I still love u

Hey CB will that starter fit on the prodrive 36 hp model? Is that what you put yours on?

I think its the same. Ours was for a 32. Call KP, he will give you the part number. Then just put it in an ebay search. That's the cheapest place I've found one. It works great. Think they are close to 200, maybe more, if you get one through pd or briggs. When I get home, I'll see if I can dig it up in my ebay account if you haven't figured it out yet.

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
This is the one we got for the 32. I would check with KP tomorrow and cross reference the part number just to make sure, but I think it will work for you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/STARTER- ... leQ5fParts

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
I bought one from these guys and was pleased. Had a similar issue as you. One place I would check for corrosion is the exposed wire between the soleniod and starter. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Star ... 53e2142e67

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
Duckaholic has a used 36 starter for sale - PM him.
The 32 and 36 starter is the same: Briggs PN- 807383 Motor−Starter(0.8KW)
That one on eBay is aftermarket, not sure how they hold up- but could be fine

Re: 2006 Prodrive 36 hp Starting Problems
Had the same problem one morning in the marsh. The problem was the starter was full of shiat. The end plate was full of mud, water and rust and the brushes would not make contact with the armature to even try to start.Pull the starter off and remove the 2 long bolts holding the back cover. Then remove the cover and clean all the shiat out of it with some type of cleaner.Put a little grease in the needle bearing in the rear cover and put back together. Then buy a spare and keep it in the boat. These starters can be fixed buy your local alternator and starter repair shop.
