 27 Kohler RPM problem
My motor (CH740-0003) spent the night under water a few months ago. I got all the water out of the engine and brought the carb to the local lawnmower shop for cleaning.
When I put everything back together I could only get 3300 RPMs (loaded and unloaded speed) out of it before I could get 3600RPMs. I think I put the springs that connect the throttle linkage to the governer on wrong. I tried putting the springs different ways with no luck. In fact now I can only get 3000RPMs. I am starting to think the govenor arm may have been bent during the recovery process.
The shop that originally cleaned my carb isn't the kohler shop here in Thibodaux, and they don't seem like they want to mess with it. I have been to the Kohler place 3 times and the mechanic has never been there. I left my number and asked them to have the mechanic call me. The guy at the counter is NO help. He just says, "Talk to Randy."
I am looking for either some advice on how to fix this or for a recommedation of who to bring it to. I live in Thibodaux and don't mind driving to bring it to a reputable shop.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
On a horizontal or vert motor? Take a pic of the linkage and post it on here. I don't think you bent the shaft or anything like that. It's possible that you moved the arm on the shaft, but I don't think so unless you took it off. Sounds like you just need to play with the spring position. There's an adjustment screw too, but it only adjust a fairly small range of rpm's so you need to be pretty close before messing with it...

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
It's a horizontal shaft. I did change the air filter, pre filter, and plugs.
I to was thinking the governer arm may have turned a bit. I only have the pic below until tomorrow. The pic shows a stop screw I had to remove to get higher RPMs. Once I removed the stop screw I could get the needed travel from the governer. I don't feel good about keeping it like that.
OOW RPMS are 3600 previous-3360 after putting everything back together-3000 after trying to get back up to 3600 The service manual says unloaded max speed is 3600 and loaded max speed is 3750

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
I was thinking my linkage looked different, but I guess it's just upside down. On mine, you screw that screw up in the top right of that pic all the way in to raise the rpm's. You said, you took it out and they went up?
Don't mess with the arm position on the shaft yet, you don't want that shaft loose in the engine. And you could make a few other problems, so lets just wait on messing with it.
On mine, on the arm that came off the shaft in the direction of that linkage in the pic, the spring was in the second position closest to the linkage (furthest from the shaft). Don't remember where the other side was attatched. I would play with the springs and that screw a lil more and see what you can come up with.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
CB That's not the screw I am referring to. The screw I am referring to is actually a bolt and nut. It is directly to the left of my finger in the pic. By backing out the bolt I am referring to simply allows me to pull the trottle cable a little more. I will try to mess with that set screw a bit tomorrow.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
If that's the case, then it sounds like your problem is your throttle isn't opening all the way. May not be the gov causing your issue. Open the throttle all the way up on the handle, then see if there is any play at the carb. If you have play, all you need to do is adjust the cable a little. Guessing something just didn't get put back exactly the way it was...

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
I have eliminated the cable being the problem. I took the cable off and worked the cable side of the linkage manually. With the set bolt in place I could only achieve 3000 RPMs. Once I remove the set bolt I can get the RPMs as high as I want.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
I'll try to dig mine out and look at it tomorrow. I didn't mess with it much before putting a mikuni on it. Don't have it out to look at, and having a hard time visualizing what everything looked like.
Play with that screw in the top of the pic, and maybe move those springs around a bit. I'll look for my linkage tomorrow and see if I can figure out what it all does.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
I seem to remember getting 4000 out of my 27 Kohler. You saying when it was running good you only got 3600.

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
get somebody to hold the throtl wide open, see if you can open the butterfly more by hand. if you can,set the cable to where it opens it all the way, then you prolly gonna have to reset the idle screw.???..

 Re: 27 Kohler RPM problem
The set screw all the way to the top of the pic doesn't do me any good.
I have been unable to determine if the butterfly is opening all the way.
Cajun - I sure would appreciate it if you could get your podna to call me. Look for a PM with my contact info.

BIG THANKS to Jeremy. He came by, helped me out, and refused any type of payment. He said I can leave that screw out. I took it out after his inspection. I got 3640 RPMs and 22MPH oput of it.
