Post 27 PD need more speed
I've had my 27 PD for about 2 years now and absolutely love it. I bought it used and got a good deal on it because the guy could not get it to run right. After changing the fuel lines, diaphram pump x2, and tank, I gave up and put a 12v 2.5-4 psi fuel pump on it. Problem solved. Anyone having problems with their motor dieing, I definitly suggest a 12v pump, save yourself some hair.

But now that I got it running right, I'd like to hop it up a little. Called KP and his only suggestion was Marshmellow, but they don't make one for a 27 kohler. Does anyone know where I can get some performance parts for the 27? Has anyone one here done any mods to a 27 kohler vert shaft?

EVT was the only company making an exhaust for the 27 pd's. BPS makes one for the horizontals that you may be able to make work but not sure. EVT is/was having vendor issues on the exhaust and I don't believe they are offered anymore. You could call them to verify that.

I have done some work on mine. You generally don't gain a whole lot of speed from doing mods, and by the time you've done enough work to gain speed, you could have purchased a new big block. What you will gain from mods is load carrying and bottom end torque.

If I had it to do all over again, I would deck heads .045, port and polish, and add an exhaust or gut the stocker. Buy a velocity stack for the stock carb and put a k&n on it. If that don't do what you want, stop, sell it, and buy the big block. You can add a mikuni, but I've had nothing but problems with it so far. You can also add the 30 hp carb/intake, but many have had issues with a flat spot around the 2500 rpm mark.

If I ever get mine right, I may recommend the mikuni and cam, but right now, I wouldn't go past heads/exhaust/k&n. If you want to fork out the dough, bore it out and go with flat top pistons, but I think your better off spending that money towards a bigger block. Kohler, generac, or briggs, pick your poison. Parts are readily available on the kohlers and briggs. EVT had been doing some work with the generacs, but it looks like parts are hard to come by from anywhere else.

Thanks for the info. Unloaded speed is not an issue, my 1542 Legend will fly with just me. Loaded with 3 ppl, dog, blocks, and gear is when it taxes the motor. I would love to trade up to a big block, but there is no way until I get a bigger boat. I have already raised the transom 4" to keep it from swamping, which really helped a lot. But now I have to be careful in reverse, trimmed too low the prop will chop up the transom. Where do you get a velocity stack for the carb. Again thanks for all the info.
