Post Boat building
I've seen lots of post on boat building here , Heres what I thinking , I use to build semi flat bed trailors for a living , all types , from log trailers to flatbeds to 50 ton lowboys fabed and fitted together in alabama, most of the welding I did was all mig welding , these boats look in pic's to be pretty easy , what I can't see is the hull , is it one peice or three peice's welded together , really thinking about building my own boat.

You can blow through alumn. pretty easy, it gets hot quick.

They build boats out of 1 solid peice and two peices, on one peice the sides are bent up until the rake, then sheared and welded to the bottom.

Where would you get aluminum that long , or better yet what about a break to bend the side or do you weld that together.

I take it there using a spoolgun and argon gas mabey , most of the welds look like mig welds.

If you want to build your own boat, give me a call. I will help you through the build. Even if it comes out bad, it is still your creation. With that said, I say go for it. What one person thinks is ugly, another thinks is fine. That is why we build boats exactly like the customer wants them.

Give me a ring on wendsday. I would like to talk to you

Post Re: Boat building
Uncle J, point taken. I'll take what I can get, if it were made of wood I'd be posting pictures for other to aspire to. But since aluminum is the material of choice I'm gonna have to learn the infant stages of boat building and ask the real stupid questions.

The part I have trouble wrapping my head around is the bending and angles of the parts bent. Are builders roll forming the longitudinal ribs or bending them. There are plenty of pictures of finished hulls and 90%, I think that if someone would take pictures along the way or 1 at each major step it'd be pretty telling about the build process.

I may sound like an idiot when it comes to making things, I'm not. I'm sure I could build a boat, there really aren't that many parts to building a small boat. What I am is green when it comes to metal fabrication and welding. I've been around woodworking and construction my whole life, I can hold my own in a machine shop with the manual machines, but welding/fabrication is something that I'm just starting to learn. I'm about as anal retentive as someone can get when it comes to building something, perfection is what I shoot for. That is why I want to know as much going in as I can, which I'm sure once the process starts some of my dumbass questions are going to be obvious, I usually have to lay eyes on something to get it. Basically, anything you or any of the other builders could show of your builds would be helpful to those wanting to build their own and those who want to buy get a good look at what goes into their boat build. Maybe when I get the time to get serious about it, we could work a deal where I trade beer for the ability to look over your shoulder and pick your brain for a bit. Hell, I'd probably be going down there to pick up the aluminum anyways.......not too much boat building going on in Memphis that calls for big aluminum.

Anyway, I understand your point. When I get wrapped up in a project I don't take pictures in the middle of it either. I did a 14 month long complete gut to the studs of my house when I bought it and all I have to show is the before and after pictures, when I have shit to do I'm not about playing with the camera.

You'd be better of building a wooden boat like mine.
