 .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
Which would depth would you recommend for decking heads on GTR23?
As I understand the process one would want to add SS 3 angle valves and shim spring to make up depth. What else? Carb will come later.

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
As I read through your posts, it is clear that you have no idea what you are doing, and don't understand what people tell you. What you said is: if you deck them .060 you shim them .060? Just take it to someone, (Hoyt,Kyle) drop it off, say: fix my fucup, when they call, pick it up, pay the bill and leave. Don't waste there time asking questions, as it appears you have no mechanical knowledge, so quit wasting everyones time, as it is useless to try to teach you. Just pay and have it done right. Be like a woman, put gas in it, run it, if it needs work, take it to have it repaired, and just pay the bill. myth is busted

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
My heads are decked .020 with a cam on my GTR 35. With a load I can spin 4100+. It works well. Too much compression = boom. Keep it small to bump Compression a little, but basically headwork fixes the problematic valve sealing issues from briggs. more efficient = more power to be made/had.

Saveontaxes I need to ask you why you posted a negative response to dguidry's question? I do agree that he may be better off taking the problem to a mechanic but I see the way you attacked him as offensive and uncalled for. One thing about forms is that people don't put there name behind what they say and therefore seem to feel it's Ok to jab anyone and run a person down. OK, I am off my soap box but the message stands for all who can read and "give a s$%t". After all you don't need to respond at all if it's that big a deal for you. What is a "form" for anyway? Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
Heads delivered to Hoyt at Gatortail. We consulted and came up with a plan. Here is my interpretation of performance expectation: HAULIN' SERIOUS ASS!!!! More customization would result in my boat taking flight so I opted to not add wings and stay on conservative side. Think of the old SS 396 engine in a mini Cooper!!!

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
Ever thought of just buying some 18 hp heads that are the same as the 23 just they are a closed chamber head meanin that you wont have to deck the heads. and you can achieve the same principle.

I think y'all are messin' with me. I see the application in auto engines but do you really think these options exist for lawnmower engines? If so, point me to a provider.

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
He is saying that's what comes on the 18hp motor. I do not know.
For the kohlers, the 30hp heads are closed chamber. The 25-27 motors are not. It is pretty common for guys to swap to the 30 heads rather than decking the stockers.

Here's an 18hp head. Def appears to be a closed chambered design. I have no idea if they will fit your motor or not... http://cgi.ebay.com/Briggs-Stratton-Van ... 43a02d252d

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
Thanks for the photos. I see how the closed head reduces combustion volume as wood decking. But what about variables like exhaust holes, and will they line up with a 23's exhaust manifold? Also, cursory reading some info about this stuff for auto applications and it seems that at higher rpms there becomes an issue with fuel delivery and combustion efficiency. Don't know why but that's what I read.

 Re: .030, .045, .060? Decking heads GTR23 Poll
dguidry,
You had a cam recently or so I think. Is Hoyt going to do an install on that for you as well? What exactly is Hoyt going to do to the motor besides install heads?
