Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
I was talking about the original 24v not the common rail but yes I know about their problems. Although I wannaconvert mine to an 05 head port and o ring it then common rail it. Thats gonna be after I get a new truck and then this one becomes either a sled puller or ends up in a bronco. That is a few years away though. I credit my gas mileage to my intake and exhaust. I do have mine chipped and run on high performance.l as ling as i am not towing. If you don't believe me I gotta drive from Cali to baton rouge in april you can come along for the ride. I do 85 right around 2100 rpms. It surprised me to the first time I did it I got 24 mpg I swore it was wrong and checked to make sure I filled the tank up. That's hand calculated and my speedo is dead on

Well that's unfortunate you don't believe me. I have made the baton rouge to San diego drive 3 times and everytime in west Texas I get 25. That's on cruise control doing between 80 and 85.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
my 06 LBZ Duramax can get upwards of 25 mpg on long trips. I took my wife back home to Jersey and I was averaging 24.9 mpg. Calculated by fuel used and fuel put back in truck verses miles ran. My truck has No cat. I gutted it and put it back. We have emissions here. From there i have 4in with a flow thru muffler. K&N air filter and a Edge chip with Attitude. I love it. I have a buddy with a 2010 Dodge 2500 cummins and he loves the motor but due to regeneration he is only getting 16 mpg on the interstate and 14 in town. Another buddy of mine is a Diesel mechanic for our school district. He is the shop manager and he says to stay away from the diesel fords. He runs a 250 ford and got the 10cylinder instead of the diesel. He claim the international motor is junk. He also said that fords NEW diesel is barely better than the old diesels.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
Wow....imo the 7.3 is the best diesel engine out there for reliability. I know many who have had them or still have them anthey are never in the shop. Ford quit using the navistar engines and now use one designed in house. I don't know a whole lot about it Also buying a 7.3 you wont have to worry about all the power sucking save the earth emission controls.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
I had a 2008 F250 with the 6.4L and ran a Spartan 250 tune with 4" turbo back exhaust and consistently saw over 20 MPG on the highway running 80 MPH.
Now I've got a 2011 F250 and average 18.5 MPG on the highway. If you haven't been in the 2011 Fords yet, I'd definitely recommend it. Nicest truck I've ever been in.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
I have a 2000 f350 with the 7.3, 4" exhaust, k&n air filter and a +80 HP tune. I have 315/75r16 tires and I get about 17-18 on the highway. I love the truck for reliability. Never had a problem with it. I know that this probably wouldn't concern you where you live, but I live in northern Illinois and it can get pretty cold at times in the winter. The duramax runs great and has great power and milage, but all my buddies that have them up here have had problems with them gelling when it get real cold out where I have never had a problem with my powerstroke.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
Update. I went to The Woodlands, TX this weekend. and did a mileage test. Drove no faster than 70 MPH, Used 8 Oz of diesel kleen (powerservice), and 8oz of @ cycle oil (has to be TCw3 ASHLESS). I got 19.4 MPG that was 270.2 miles on 13.88 gallons of diesel. My last trip I drove 75 mph and got 17.7 MPG with no additives. I think the biggest gain is actually slowing down.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
It probably doesn't affect you guys, but here in cowboy country, there are way more Fords than Dodges, because getting into a Dodge PU knocks your cowboy hat off. In Idaho, where there are all baseball caps, there are 100 Dodges to every Ford. On a serious note, I recently had to get my 03 Dodge 2500 SMOGGED! The first thing the tech did was make sure everything was stock (It took a while to get it there). So, word to the wise - keep and store in a safe place anything you take off. It may be coming soon to your neighborhood.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
I've got an 06 2500 with a Cummins in it and have been happy with it. I bought it new and plan to drive it for 20 years. I used to be a jeep whore in a prior life, had 4 of'em in 6 years. I don't regularly tow heavy, but have towed around 10k with no problem even with no trailer brakes, though I wouldn't want to repeat it on a 1100 mile trip. My fuel millage is all over the place and I hand calculate at every fill up, fill the tank until visibly full. City driving I get around 15 mpgs. I average 20 on the interstate. The best I've done was drive from Memphis to my sisters wedding in Indiana, 550 miles and when I got there I filled the tank with 23 gallons, that makes 24mpg and I wish I could do that all the time. My truck is bone stock, I'll eventually put some bigger tires than the 265's that come on it and probably an intake and exhaust but I hate messing with shit that aint broke.
I like the look and "feel" of the Fords but don't know much about them. I heard a rumor that to do certain engine work they have to pull the whole cab??? Sounds expensive!

I think the duramax is the beat out but if I was buying a new one I would get a ford. Just b/c we didn't have to bail them out. I drive an 06 dodge and get 23-25 on the highway. Motor is stout but the rest of the truck is crap

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
I have a 04 f-250 6.0L with over 200,000 on it and still running strong. Never had a problem with the motor, had a new transmission put in at 140,000, but my camper had alot to with that. I get 20-23 mpg empty depending on speed, i have a 38' triple slide 5th wheel that I pull with it, weighs 14,900 dry. Prolly closer to 16,500 the way it sits now. Prolly 50k to 60k of those miles are dragging that camper, still have factory suspension and no problems with any of that either. I get around 9 mpg on the interstate pulling it. They'll def tow more than 12k but stopping that train is another thing.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
Ford has good diesels engines they just need a little tlc. The 6.0 needs new head studs and additional fuel and oil filters to prevent injectors going out and high pressure pump from going out. The 6.0 also needs so be driven hard to keep the carbon built up off the turbo so it opperates corretely. You also need to prevent the hot exhaust gas from being circulated back into the engine. Along with heating up the engine coolant. The 6.4 is a good design also just need a little tlc. The 6.4 needs a dpf delete along with the egr system. The hot exhaust gas and heating the coolant the way they did with the egr system is what causes all the problems for 6.4. The 6.4 could also benefit from a additional fuel and oil filtration system.
Our diesel is very dirty compared to the europe fuel which is where these engines were designed. People don't change oil in them like they should. Which is what causes all the problems along with not changing the fuel filters.
But I don't know why the companies treat the exhaust gas like they do to meet emmissions. They should be looking at attatives they could add to the combustion chamber to make the diesel burn more efficiently. When people put propane on their trucks or water/methane their emmissions goes way down because they are getting their trucks to burn the fuel more efficiently.
The diesel engine is only about 30 efficient, if the companies would put research into getting a higher efficiency they could use smaller engines. The engine itself would need less fuel because it would be more efficient which would result in the person getting a lot higher mpg.

Re: Best Diesel Pick Up Truck?
On another note. Chevrolet has a 14 speed allison trans developed. But, I will most likely not ever make it into production because it supposedly would get 38 mpg on the interstate. I personally would love it. Im usually pulling a John Deere 450j Lgp dozer and a 333D skidsteer loader. I pull them seperatly of course. But i would love it for taking on grades.
