 VIZSLA
Anyone on here own one or hunted with one. Looking into getting a dog and I like the looks of the dog. My main concern is the cold weather because they have a short coat.

 Re: VIZSLA
I have used one for 7 years for duck hunting. I will put a vest on him when it gets cold and he does fine.

 Re: VIZSLA
They are primarily used for pointing arent they? Ive seen them in south Texas and they work the fields tirelessly.

 Re: VIZSLA
Always liked them, they are leaner than a lab for sure I guess thats why cold weather can get to them. Beautiful dogs...........got 2 currs on their way to doggy heaven, thay are 12 and 13 yrs old and been worked pretty hard. Wife wont let me get another till their gone. Was lookin to get a big a$$ retriever, either a big british lab or a landseer...........my neighbor has a 110 lb yella lab, looks like a mastiff, thats what got me lookin at landseers.

 Re: VIZSLA
I have an English lab. She is short and stocky. You can see her pics in the dog pics thread above.
Never trained for hunting. Just a pet. Great with the kids even when they are pulling her ears and chasing her around the house.

Blaze
I hunted over one 20 years ago and seen several others. Mostly they are used for upland birds, with a occasional duck hunt. I don't think they or german shorthairs have enough coat to be serious duck dogs, the vest does help but you are takeing years off the dogs life buy putting them in cold water with out a proper coat even with a vest. They will do the work, it's just not good for them. Becarefull were you buy from , they were in vogue for the showring. You want a dog out of working stock. Don't fall for the dual champion bullshit. Make sure mom and pop are hunted hard.
Some strains barely get out from under your feet others can run big make sure of what you want before buying. The DD pudlepointer or a even good wirehair are much better versetail dogs.

 Re: VIZSLA
I dated a girl who's family bred them. They were mostly for quail and pheasant though.

 Re: VIZSLA
After talking with a couple of breeders its prob best I stick with a lab. One of the breeders took theirs duck hunting and said the dog was fine while hunting. Once they got back to the house the dogs tail and paws were hurting bad from the cold. Acting as if it was frostbite. I know our winters aren't that cold but I don't wanna put any dog into harms way.

 Re: VIZSLA
Blaze, I have duck hunted with vizsla's almost a decade if you want to talk about it shoot me a pm. I live in cali. so my winters are not that extreme but we do get some ice from time to time. If your dog is not a house dog and is use to being out side they will not be that tender. My vizsla hunts a 100 day season in all weather conditions and he is fine. And if you are that worried you can always get a wire hair vizsla. Where I live the summers are extreme and he weathers the summers very well. So the breed works for me.
