Post Thinking about going to a dual set up- Need Advice
I am considering either having a boat built or buying a hull to run dual Pro Drives. I understand the pros are better top end and and better load carrying, and this is the purpose, but how do these set up's do in the thick stuff? Do the two motors help you dig out when stuck, or does the extra weight offset the gains? I am curious because this would be a factor in my decision. If I am going to spend that type of cash, I better be able to go where I need to go! If not, it is probably not going to be worth it. But I always carry a big load, and I was thinking about having this boat double as a flat's fishing/ duck hunting boat. I was thinking a 20x60 or maybe a 19x60 with full cat walks, a removable rear deck, full front deck with push pole stand on the back,. permanent mounted winch and trolling motor, and lots of storage in the compartments. I figure the only way to haul that type of load is going to be with duals. I have a PD 36 already modded, and I would add another, but probably not do all of the same mods- I may just replace the muffler and do the heads on the new motor.

Would it be ok to have one motor a CDI with just heads and exhaust, and then have a non CDI with a carb, heads, exhaust, intake, rockers and cam. Will the horsepower differences do anything to the performance of the hull?

Thank you for the input. I have not thought this completely through yet, but I am playing with the idea, and I was looking for some input.

Doing mods will gain more HP no question. Duals are nice but will it pay off?

From a fishing & hunting perspective I can do pretty much everything I need to do & can go pretty much everywhere in my 1860 (exact description you provided in the rig you want) it has flotation because I run rough bays. I have a removable poling platform and casting deck (which is actually just a Yetti cooler). In all honesty if you were to go out poling how many people are on your boat? For me that number is 2. Most I carry fishing with me is maybe 3 or 4 guys MAX. That's wadefishing or drift fishing... On my 22' bay boat most I like to fish with is 3 because of the nice spacing it offers. Sure you can fish 4 wide but that's a lot of people throwing all the same direction all on one side of the boat.

I will say I like the ability of being able to maneuver the motor very fast and lift it out of the water etc so for me I did look at a CC model but opted for a tiller because of the more 4WD aspect, allows you to really get after it when in the thick stuff!

if ya cant keep the mud around the prop, if ya keep blowing it out it dosent matter if ya had 6 of those motors back there, you wont go anywhere. So if your gonna be in the mud alot then you need to get the motor that will trim down the deepest. If your running shallow water and veggies, those prodrives will kicka$$. You will also want the hydroreverse with those duals if you go with prodrive and hydro trim.

Post Re: Thinking about going to a dual set up- Need Advice
Westend- that is exactly my question, are duals worth it? I am not sure it is worth the extra cash and hassle of having two motors to maintain etc. Hunting I will have know more than 3 and frankly I prefer only 2...for a variety of reasons. Fishing I could see having 3-4 tops. I do run a remote set up, so I do give up some 4x4 so I was wondering If 2 motors would offset this limitation. I am running thick vegetation, not mud. As a result of the terrain I run the CC has not been limiting. However if I continue to add more weight in the new hull (as I described) I worry it is going to be a dog. I don't have to run 30 with a load everywhere, but I am used to running 27-29 pretty loaded down. It would be hard to go back to the 22-23 mph days. Thx again for your input.

I think I know the answer, but has anybody ever put a dual set up with a GTR and a PD? :D

If you want to carry loads go duals if you want a boat to pass go with single with mods!! I dont think a dual boat will ever go where a single will!! Weight of boat and motors kill it in those conditions pluss if you get stuck your in for a long day!!

I have a 22'x7' with a stg1 36 prodrive, 250 yamahammer and stg1 35 gtr.

I run the outboard till it gets shallow trim the jackplate all the way up and bring down the mudmotors, works like a charm ;)

Put it this way double the motors double the price for mods, more shit to go wrong, on the other hand you'll be the badest mofo out there, i've ridden in one and it was awesome except when we blew a trim relay and couldn't trim one motor.

Like take em said, sucks when one motor goes down. Especially if there are 7 drunk ppl in the boat and you are stuck in a small area. And its 1 in the morning.

Yes you can putt in on one, hell if you only have 2 people and light gear i can get 25 on one motor, but when you have liquid courage and it is 1 in the the morning with 7 people in an area that you proberly shouldnt be in, the situatation gets kinda hairy.

Its simple.

If you run long distances with a load 800+ pounds for 5+ miles get duals. I say this for 2 reasons. 1...if you put 500+ hrs on a motor eventually it will leave you stranded no matter what the brand and the second motor will get you home! secondly it will carry the load at a much lower RPM and saving you wear and gas on your motor. Maintenance cost double but if you can pay for a dual rig you are not worried about a few bill once a year. Make sure the boat is build for duals!

I WOULD NOT GET DUAL ProDrives if you run hard bottom or will only be running short distances no matter what the load. GT might be slightly better but no motor likes hard bottoms. You say it a flats/hunting boats so you will only be hunting a few weeks out of the years and fishing the remainder. You will be able to carry a 1000 lb load 15+ mph with a stock 36 pd on a 2060 hull with no problem. It’s not fast but for short trips it will worth I and you will be able to run 25+ with a fishing load. Then when you get in a bind you can push the boat off with a lot less trouble. Your motor is modded so you will see 25+ with 1000 lb load if it’s a stage 1 and if it’s a stage 2 or 3 you will see a few hours..LMAO!!!

I have a dual 2054 and love it for what we use it for. We run long distances on rivers and use it as a decoy boat and I use it as a family boat all summer.

If you want to run thick stuf get a tiller setup.....
