Post newbie - basic qestions
sorry but, I'm the new guy, and I need a little help with the very basics. I was introduced to the "mudmotor" via internet/this forumn.

Why would a person want a mud motor, or a longtail, or surface drive, etc... what are they for, how are tehy superior to standard outboards, how are they inferior, what are the differences between each, etc....?

THANKS in advance for your insight and patience

An outboard can not go where a mud motor can... an outboard relies on a water pump to cool the engine. When you go across a mud flat there is no water & a pump can get clogged resulting in engine failure / overheating. A mud motor is air cooled.

They don't have to have water from the lake to cool the engine, For the most part, they use lawnmower engines, most are air cooled, but some are water cooled, and have there own cooling system, with radiator. They just dont have to rely on lake water for cooling.

not intended to step on toes ;)

They are also able to hit stumps logs etc and keep going, where a hard hit with an outboard and your looking for a new lower unit.

They are slower, harder to drive, louder, more expensive to maintain, and most brands don't offer reverse.
