Post Is this normal?
Yesterday I went ride and burnt waaay more fuel than I have ever burnt in a day of riding. it was about 9 gallons or a lil more in about 6 hours. there was a couple of times i really was working the motor hard to get out of a couple spots, but other than that it was running across a lake. My exhaust has a blue flame out the back that resembles a jet fighter running through the marsh, but only at WFO. My question is- does the fact that my exhaust has no baffles/screen in it letting the flame come out or am I running rich? I have a stock carb with k and N filter, and exhaust. Also, no matter how long the motor has sat, it never needs the choke to start it, just give it gas a couple times and it starts right up. could it possibly be my choke isnt closing all the way? the motor runs great, bumped 29 mph a couple times and gets on step really quick. Someone with knowledge of stock carbs please chime in.

thanks,
rod

First- make sure your air filter is clean. Spray the K&N cleaner on it, let it set and then run water through it. Do it in a bucket and see how much crap comes out of it. Dry and re-oil.
Second- Full throttle burns way more fuel than 3/4 throttle. High flow exhaust runs more air/fuel through the motor.

I'd say normal. My 36 burns minumum 2 gal per hour.

Blue flame is usually a sign of lean.

I wanted to ask you what size tank you had in the boat. In that last trail is when one of my 6 gallon tanks went empty. I ran a muffler with no baffles and I don't remember it messing with how much gas I used. It was nice to meet you. I think the pic we took of you getting pulled either your shooting us the finger or mooning us. lol

I later realized we rode almost 60 miles that day!! So guess my fuel consumption isnt that far off.

Its just like an outboard...If you run that mofo wide open, your fuel economy curve drops off drastically.

This is for a yamaha 250 outboard, but you get the picture.

1000 1.5 - 2 GPH
2000 4.5 - 5.5
3000 8 - 9
4000 12 - 13
5000 24 - 26
5500 26 - 27

notice the difference between 4000 and 5000 rpm...

My CDI burns noticeably more gas than my last motor. 5 gallons just doesn't last very long... For a weekend trip like that.
