 Bow for bow fishing
I want to get into this and was wondering what a reasonably priced bow would be.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Its all a matter of preference. Best advise is to go with someone and try different kinds of bows. I started with compounds and went to recurves shortly after and its all I use now. My boys use a fishhawk and a barracuda (both compounds) They are good bows if you like compounds. Check some local pawn shops as well. Sometimes you get lucky and find a good one cheap. Just be careful if you buy a used bow, check it out before you buy. I have had people try to sell me bows the had twisted limbs and other problems as if there was nothing wrong with the bow. hope this helps.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Don't mean to hijack, but I was looking at a barracuda bow only, and then setting it up with the muzzy package. Any thoughts on this combo?

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
I've shot an old bear recurve for the last 13-14 years and always liked it. I bought a used older oneida last year and like it a lot also. Haven't got to use the oneida much, but they make a really nice bow. If you are gonna be serious about it, oneida is what I would look at. If not, just get you an old recurve. I never much enjoyed shooting a traditional compound at fish.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Forget the compound and get a sage recurve. I have this bow from 3 rivers archery and it is all that you need. I have hunted everything from deer to fish with this bow. The bow is only $129. It is a takedown so it fits in my gun box on my boat and I dont have to worry about it getting beat up. http://www.3riversarchery.com/Bow+Fishi ... oduct.html[/url]

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Ive got 2 Matthews Genesis bows rigged for bow fishing. Its a youth compound. I've got about $330 or so between the bow and the reel setup. I love them.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
we have shot them all. PSE, Mathews, Bear, and every other cheap bow that could be found in the local pawn shop. Rigged with a decent reel, muzzy pionts on a 5/16th shaft, all that's needed for hours of shooting in the target rich environment of the Louisiana marshes. Stop thinking about it and go fishing already!

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Just depends on what you want really... You could piece something together for a couple hundred or get the mack daddy set ups for upwards of 750ish

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Well ive never been one to talk about doin something for to long so I went out and took a little of everyones advise and priced together a rig. PSE stinger from local pawn shop, 60 lbs draw is a little much but it is set at 80% let off so it should be fine. Picked up a muzzy xtreme drop rest, ams retriever and a plain white fiber glass shaft and mounted a muzzy gar broadhead. Everything seems good, but I can not for the life of me get the retriever to reel in line unless I put my thumb on the wheel forcing some friction amd moving the line. Any tips? Might be strung wrong, not really sure and there were no directions in te pack.
All in all they up cost me 90 for the bow 20 for the rest, 75 fo the retriever and about 8 for the arrow head and shaft combined.
I guess my weekend will be all tied up.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Academy sports sucks, case closed, problem solved. The ams retriever I purchase had been previously returned, hence the lack of directions and oh yea how abot the trigger function so it will reel back in.
Well I returned it and went with a zebco 808 standard reel. Seems good enough but I really liked the smooth flow out of the ams unit. Unfortunatley they are sold out of them and I plan to try it out tomorrow. Oh well worked out I guess.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Be extremely careful with the 808 setup. I know that they work great, but I've seen what can happen when something goes wrong. I would suggest setting the drag very loose and not try to use the reel the fish in. I know someone who shot with the 808 and either he didn't push the button first, or it got tangled in the reel, but whatever happened the string stopped the arrow causing the arrow to come back and stick him in the neck. You'd be surprised how bad the nock can fu*k you up.

 Re: Bow for bow fishing
Yea the 808 is def my second choice but I will likely replace it next season with a ams from somewhere other than academy. Just want to get out there this weekend. I do appreciate the advise amd any other u might have as I am a total newb on the sport.
