 pro drive help
ok guys heres the deal. ihave an 08 prodrive with a mikuni and bps crossover. now the problems. i went to start it today to let it run for a little bit (ran it last weekend also) and it was real hesitant to start. after getting it started i let it run a for about 5 minutes and then gave it some gas and notice the rpms running up to about 4600 rpms... checked the wires on the rev limiter and the white wire goingto the main wiring harness had come loose. recrimped the wire and it still wont kick in. think its a fried rev limiter??? also, the thing backfires almost everytime i start it back up from idling....
please help...

 Re: pro drive help
Never had a rev limiter, but that sounds like symptoms that others have posted before. Sounds like your rev limiter is faulty. Where is is mounted? Disconnect it completely and see if the backfiring goes away.

 Re: pro drive help
Try disconnecting it completely and see what happens. I'm sure Camo will have some help for ya next time he's on.

 Re: pro drive help
try setting your idle down. always let your motor idle a while before you shut it off. does the backfire happen right after you try to restart after shutting it down?. un hooking the green wire. it will tell you if the limiter is working. just becareful doing that it will let the engine over rev. tiny tacs can be off a bit . 4600 rpms out of the water will happen. are you sure the white wire was hooked up to. to begin with ?. most limiters didn't use that wire.

 Re: pro drive help
in all honesty, it may not have been. it started without it hooked up but figured it was supposed to be... and my idle is set at 1000-1150 right now in neutral and between 800-950 with the clutch engaged. it wont idle any lower than that.. and i let it idle for at least a minute before i shut it down. like i said it doesnt do it everytime but more than i would like... and yes when i kill the motor i let it sit for a few seconds and then try again and on the first turn it backfires through the exhaust and a couple of times even seen smoke coming from the air filter...and before these problems it would bump the rev limiter on trailer. now it seems as if it will go as high as 4900 rpms and i get some wicked valvetrain noise.....

 Re: pro drive help
this all started after we had a real bad storm this week too. the wind blew the cover off the motor and i didnt notice till the following morning... will the backfires affect anything? and no i havent checked that yet but was going to try this weekend. what is the lash supposed to be on the 36 briggs? havent searched it yet but will if need be.

 Re: pro drive help
you need to ck your throttle cable to make sure it in not binding up and keeping the idle up. u should be able to idle that motor down to nothing.losin up the throttle cable at the tiller handle and slide the paddle back.and than try to readjust your idle. back fires are not good. hard on valves. i'am know thinking you might have a bad limiter. i've heard of guys hooking the white wire up and than exp bad limiters. good luck.

 Re: pro drive help
ok, got it figured out rev limiter was cutting power to the coils... valve lash is good. and the backfire problem was because it was running too lean... set the idle down to around 830 and she is purring like a kitten... also throttle cable was sticking a bit so i used some liquid graphite and every thing is good to go...
thanks for the help guys!!!!
