I'd like yall to meet the newest addition to our family- Purdey. I didn't pay much for her but she is an AKC pure bred lab. She is not from champion blood lines but I am hoping she will be an effective bird dog. I have some old pintail feathers on a fishing line that she loves chasing around so the proper instincts are there. We have only had her 48 hours but she is already completely comfortable here at our house. She's almost 8 weeks old right now- born May 4th. I have attached a pic of her from yesterday morning. I took her out on her first ride and she seemed right at home. We were riding WOT in the dark before sunup and she wasn't nervous whatsoever. Now, yall please give me whatever advice you have for me to properly train her for ducks and doves. Ideally I would like to get her into a training program but that's a good ways off still.

Start early with paint rollers easy bumpers for pups. Don't let her have it just toss it a few times etc. A good book to get is Water Dog they actually now have a version on DVD.

the water dog dvd is a great tool. ive used it on my dog plus a little professional training and very pleased with the way he performs.

Shes not black but shes still a nice looking pup j/k wit ya. Check out the fowl dawg vids too...aiken vid is a great starter. I liked it the best out of all, especially starting out. Lots of good info

FowlDawgs is a set of 3 dvds. You can buy them one at a time. What I did after veiwing both, I decided to start with the Aiken vid. He offers a lot of info for a "hunting" dog, not a trial dog. Ive used it up until force fetch and then going to transition to the fowldawg set because he carries the training further than chris. The duck dog basics is a must watch imo. Especially if you have no clue what to do.

I picked up Water Dog this morning and watched a few minutes of it at lunch. I like what I see so far. I will probably look into others as well just for the heck of it. Water Dog was the only one yall suggested that Bass Pro had in stock. Hey- I have a question for yall -- Are any of yall's Labs considered your family pet as well as your duck dog? My wife was giving me some flack today about me hoarding Purdey all to myself. I have been doing it because I have this fear of Purdey bonding to my wife and not me. Will a Lab pup be able to share more than one deep bond? My wife is saying that the dog is "ours" not "yours." What have yall experienced as far as a Labs bond to the family? I would bet she will bond well to me because I will be training her but Purdey is home with my wife this summer because Meagan is a teacher and has the summer off. Should I be worried about this at all?

Great looking pup you got there first of all.. Looks alot like my new pup. I wouldn't worry about the bond. As long as you are the primary one working retrieves and her "fun time" she will relate to you the best. If she is anything like my two she will be a great hunter and a good family companion as long as you spend the time establishing discipline from 6 weeks to 6 months. I have gotten my dogs from Wildrose in Oxford and have found "The Wildrose Way" DVD to be a great help. Good luck with her i'm sure she will turn out fine!
