 Fabricating a muffler
Has anyone here tried to fabricate a muffler successfully for their mud motor? I'm looking to replace the stock muffler on my 23 briggs vanguard before it falls apart and don't really like the bps mufflers. i've had the crossover and cracked a weld within a week. i also didn't see any gains and may have lost hole shot with it on. i'm open to all ideas or other products already out there but i'd like to stay with something at or quieter than the crossover. if the "Q" came in my motor size i'd be all over it.
thanks for the input in advance

 Re: Fabricating a muffler
Not sure when you had a Crossover, but they changed them up a lil bit to reinforce them. Don't crack near as much, in fact, I can only think of one person who had a new one crack. As for performance, I don't see how you didn't see any gains over a stock exhaust. Even with the baffle in, it's still less restrictive than stock. If you just flat out refuse BPS, get with Dan the MarshMellow man & order a MM kit & weld it yourself.
Sent from my Droid because I'm trying to be as cool as you someday.

 Re: Fabricating a muffler
im not sure but i dont thing dan at MM is going to produce the 23hp exhaust. just to much work and not enought demand is what he told me. But he may have changed his mind since then. I would give him a call and see if he will work with you like he did me on a prototype deal. The price was alot cheaper being i had raw materials and all i had to do was build it. tell him CLICK sent ya and you want the same exhaust.

 Re: Fabricating a muffler
Got a little further today. i added a spring pipe to help with any motion transfer between the engine and where it will be mounted on the lower frame. by going with a larger size than the 1.5" pipe, i hope to have it double as a resonator to clean up the tone.
i'm going to keep the exhaust out of the water for the time being. my plan is to build a silencer similar to the one i ran on the crossover. if i remember correctly, it was the next size down pipe with some holes drilled through the section that was inside the larger exhaust port. i don't think it was capped and drilled but i don't really remember.
should have the other end cap on the can welded back up tomorrow and it should be ready for paint. has anyone used the krylon bbq paint good to 1200*? i've seen how hot some of these cans can get and i'm wondering if i need something rated a little higher. what have you used/seen used with good results on headers or exhaust?
Btw, does anybody know why the stock muffler won't fit with the mikuni carb? is it a clearance issue with the two support mounts inside the head pipes?
Thanks in advance

 Re: Fabricating a muffler
this is how she ended up, minus a clamp to secure the glasspack. it's a 12" glasspack on the end to add just a bit of back pressure and tone. i've installed in backward, since it is louvered, to keep the flow high. it is quieter than my crossover and appears to be pretty snappy on the throttle. from the driver's seat , the lower tone is quieter than my stock muffler as well. the most noticeable noise is simply the engine.
i have a couple cell phone sound files if anyone is interested.
