Post 35 vanguard engine problem
This my first post in search of how to fix my problem. I have a 35 vanguard that I use as a fan motor on my bowfishing boat. The motor has a electric fuel pump and regulator neither has been changed before my problem. I have cleaned the carb twice. The motor cranks great. Idles great . Run good at mid throttle. When I gap it to full throttle it bogs and black smoke and I can see gas spitting out the overflow tube. The govern isn't hooked up. Airfilter is clean. This problem came out of no where. I used it put it up then used it again and the problem started. Should I buy a new carb? Thanks for the help

Pull your valve covers off and be sure that all 4 push rods are still in place.

Then check to be sure that all of your valves are opening by cranking the engine over with the valve covers removed...making sure that all 4 valves are opening and closing.

Please explain by the choke sticking? I can pull the choke out and push it back. Everything looks like it's working the right way? Would the choke move open at full throttle.

Operate your throttle to full speed and see if your choke is affected ??

Engine running or not will do for this test

I looked at my choke and looked like it could move some. I took a spring and put on the arm of the choke going into the carb. It seemed to help about 50% could it still be moving in the carb?

Post Re: 35 vanguard engine problem
I have used the search tool before I posted. My 35 vanguard is stock. Stock carb. My govern has been bypassed to allow it to idle lower( it worked great with the govern by pass when I bought it). The problem came with not change to the set up. I put a spring on the choke arm entering the carb. After this it seemed to be 50% better. I could gap it from idle to wot and it would bog and black smoke for 30 seconds then pick up rpms and run great at top end no bog. I can gap it from mid to wot with not bog . But when I go from idle to wot it bogs then picks up

You talking about the foam prefilter? You can discard that thing.

Yes, the carbs on the MB site are for the horizontal 35's. You can try to contact SETX Performance or the BoatDr as well. One of them may have one in stock.

I THINK it's .004 intake and .005 exhaust 1/4 turn past TDC I THINK .....
Im not leanin towards valves though....just wanna eliminate that thought
Do you have dual exhaust??
Have you pulled your plugs and looked at them see if one is more discolored than the other??

You got a hour meter on this motor?
