 Blue Green Algae
Wondering if you guys from down south have ever heard of or seen this crap. It's supposed to be really bad stuff if you touch or ingest it. It seems like we've had an outbreak of it this summer do to high water levels and hotter than normal temps. Most of the spots around here close to our normal hunting spots are either covered in the stuff or has traces of it along the banks. State (KDWP) has posted warnings at the entrances of the water discouraging any forms of boating and has even closed down a lake due to the microbe levels in the water. To my knowledge a couple dogs have died from drinking the water and a couple kids were hospitalized after swimming in it. Just kinda bums a guy out with teal starting this weekend and ducks in the near future.

 Re: Blue Green Algae
It is due to an overdose of nutrients coupled with high temps and lack of wind (odd for KS). Even though I've lived in the South for decades now, I can tell you that for Milford (and the other lakes) to get that bad, well... things are bad. I've trained retrievers for years and I'll beg you not to put your dog at risk. Once things cool down and the wind blows a bit, this will fade away. I'll bet you are not dealing with this during big duck season.
Excess fertilizer (nitrates, phosphates) in the Republican would be the primary cause. I've been hunting the N end of the lake there since '80 and I'll be back again this year. Just look for the GDSD.
