 Ordered my first mud motor
I order a 17x54 with 3/16ths bottom custom boat and I have never owned a mud motor before so I am just curious about how much gas my new motor is going to drink. The motor is a GTR 35 with stage 1 mod., I am thinking about just putting a 12 gal tank in the boat, but I have found a 15 gal tank that will also fit. If the motor is not going to be to much of a gas hog then I will just stick the 12 gal tank and cut down on weight.

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
man I don't know the hour break down I did for my Kawi 29 EFI... but my 35 uses very little fuel... it would take 4 or 5 trips to run 12gallons of fuel and when I say trips I mean 10 miles or so at WOT...

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
Gas consumption varies from boat to boat (mostly because of the weight) but general rule of thumb is about 2 gallons per hour at w.o.t.

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
Ohh yeah, 12gal will be plenty, my longest runs are not but about 15 miles and with around 2 gal an hour at w.o.t I should be fine. They got one left at the dealer here in town so ill crab it tomorrow before someone else does, thanks guys

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
On a normal fishing trip, my GPS will show 15 miles of track and my 6 gallon tank will be over half full.
Before mods, I got 45 miles out of a 6 gallon tank before it ran dry, scouting one morning. I was running 3/4 throttle most of the time.
I have thought about going to a bigger tank but the only time I needed it was when I knew I would be pushing the limits of the 6 gallon tank, and just carried my 6 gallon container in the boat.
It's also cheaper to dispose of 6 gallons of bad/old gas than it is 12.

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
I had though about just buying 2 of the 6 gal tanks. That way when I know I'm gonna be making some longer runs I can just stick it in the boat, and like you said, I wont have to be getting rid of 12 gallons of gas

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
I run a 9ga gas tank it's portable & has quick disconnect. I keep it topped off. Stock I got 9MPG, I bet I'm more like 5-6 MPG now with the added mods & heavy throttle hand

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
The 9 gallon tank seems to work out very well. I pushed it close a couple of times with a 6 gallon tank in my other boat, so I went with the 9 gallon. I always have fuel left after a run, a good comfort level.

Re: Ordered my first mud motor
I run a 12 gal tank in my boat (Stock 35 Briggs) but just did a 4 day moose hunt and burned about 7.5 gal.s Usually pack an extra 5 if not sure how far I will get on any given day. In late fall I switch out my 12 gal. tank for a 3 gal when hunting ducks in real stiff and skinny water. It will use alot more per hour, maybe like 3.5 gal per hour, when loaded real heavy and running but usually on a 10 day hunt I will burn anout 1.5 gal per running hour but we run a bunch at low idle and riding the currents. I know Stu figures about 2.5 to 3 gal per hour and he should know seeing how he is running upwards to 300 hours a season. Hope this helps. Duckdon
