I seem to be running through a lot of trailer tires. The outsides of the tires wear before the middle of the tread... I have them properly inflated but I think it's due to the "kick" McClain put in my axle. For all those pulling a galvanized trailer does your single axle back there have a kick in it?

When I got my axle repaired 2 months after owning it they put one in there but now I'm starting to think it's counter productive and causing me to burn through tires.

I do put close to 1000 miles a month on my rig from May - February so maybe I'm just not adding everything up right

Does anyone keep track of the miles or life they get out of their trailer tires?

If they wear more on the outside than the inside, it sounds like your axle is bent. We had one with a bent axle, but must have been bent in the other direction. It was eating the tires up on the inside. I don't know what you mean by putting a "kick" in it.

1) what brand of tires are you running?

2) is it wearing out smoothly, or do you have little trinagle shaped points on each section of tread?

If it is wearing smothly, that is either under inflation, or overloading the capacity of the tire. If you are getting a bunch of points (triangle shapped) on each section of tread then that is usually an axle that is out of alignment.

I am not sure how it could be out of alignment... obviously I'll be working on this trailer the next couple of days. I just got off the phone with McClain and I will be getting some new hub kit (which I do once a year) and I will be bringing it to them before putting new tires on to have them inspect what could be causing this issue.

Boat Dr. do you think my axle may have shifted forward slightly? It seems to track perfect when behind the truck.

Buy a good set of radial tires and I bet that solves your problem. Marathons or something along those lines.

Put a tape measure on it and see. Cheap tires wear fast. If you ever replace an axle get a HD axle. You can always soften it up with lighter springs but you always want the alxe itslef to be stout.

It is more than likely the Crapisle tires that just arent holding up. I have a very reliable source that tells me that they are made from recycled condoms.

I would check to make sure that the axle is in alignment too. Measure from the center of the (front) spring bolt to the rear of the trailer on each side.

Carlisle tires FORKIN SUCK, and measure from the hitch center to a common point on each side of the axle. Also most traler use leaf springs. The more you load a spring it squats.. Well when that happens the front point is FIXED and the back either slips or works through a shackle. That will cause the axle to move back as its loaded. If iyou load more stuff to one side then your axle can be forced out of wack. It is called axle steer. make sure your mounting loactions are square from the hitch.

I measure from the coupler to springs. If your trailer is out of square then measuring from the rear is doing you no good. Your pulling point is the ball/coupler and you want to be squared up with that point.

And what if the tounge/couple has been jacknifed and isnt straight? There is a much better chance of that happening than twising the entire frame.

^EZ lube spindles are the Shiznit. Pumps grease to the inner bearing first then to the outer bearing. This can also Flush any water out of your hubs.

If your trailer is jacked and out of square it will not matter if your pulling straight and square from the coupler. It could have an S bend in it. As long as the tires are squared up to the pull point it will run true. If your tongue is jacked up then replace it. Pretty simple fix.

I have the axle with the grease fitting on the spindle. I love them! I just pump out the old grease once a month as part of routine maintenance.

There is a new bearing out that apparently has a lifetime warranty!

Those cheap tires can have erratic wear patterns. I have read several times how a good set of tires will fix that issue. I have 4 years and several 1000 miles on mine and they look almost new.

I had them balanced this last time to provide better life.

I'll look at other tires.

Stopped by McClain they only offer the Vault axles (lifetime warranty) on the 3,500 lb axles.

Picked up new bearing kits, springs and all hardware plus some side panels by the wheel well were the wood had fallen off.

$120 out door not too bad.

I will NEVER buy another manufactured trailer. They are not worht the coin. For a few hundred more you can get built trailer made with a big axle, LED lights, and better components. I have acess to getting it hot dipped if I wanted to, But them galvanized trailers are just some poop!

I can't believe you got that many miles on Carlisle tires! Mine would always blow before I got 1000 miles on them. Buy some Goodyear Marathons and you will forget about this problem.

I was having the same problem, wear on the outside of both tires, and they were Goodyear Marathons-basically ruined a set. Come to find out Diamond City put a camber axle on my 3500 pound duck boat trailer. I know for a fact my rig doesn't weigh near that. Brother replaced my axle/springs/hubs with one that was straight. Good to go. Why the heck would you put a camber axle on this light weight trailer?! Mine is not the only D City trailer to have had this problem.

bias tires will do that no matter if strait or not.
