i am an engineer... more project based then design based... i enjoy my job... somedays in the office get long especially when its all paperwork... but 2/3 of my time is spent in a supervising position monitoring construction activity the other 1/3 is real engineering and paperwork.

still young so have the least amount of vacation, but it still enough to make all 10 weekend hunts in duck season with a few days to spare thanks to some nicely place holidays (some of them I can float from the spring till the winter)

Check in to corrosion tech they seem to always be looking for them on the pipeline jobs around here. I hear they make very good wages. I work in a refinery and do good for myself but going to the same place everyday gets old I would like to think a pipeline gig would be better but I dunno.

well aint that jus nice i might be the only youth in america thar is worried about my career as an adult and your telling me to work at a fast food restraunt and to not even try to make somthing of my self well guess what its peaple like you is the reason the country is circleing the toilet and i honestly dont care for your opinion so kiss my white ass [/quote]

No, the problem is too many youths think they can just show up to college, get the "participation ribbon" and then are entitled to make 6 figures. Your command of the written language is atrocious (that means really bad), and you think you can hack an engineering program?

Again, if your posts are reflective of your intellect, which I suspect they are, you got no shot at an engineering degree. That doesn't mean you can't make a great income and have a great career. I just think someone who is "engineering material" has more attention to detail, and greater writing capacity.

Also, thank you for confirming your race, it's difficult to tell from your writing.

well first off you dont even know me and i know that you "old timers" jus looked at most youths as just some white trash hick that walks around eith there pants hanging of there ass. I find the way you look apon my grammerical skills as bad but I go to carroll academy( inside joke for anyone hatlives remotely near Carrollton MS),Lastley i dont think i should just "show up" to college and make six figures i think you get out of somthing from what you put into it and i look at my time in school(grade school or college) as an investment not just a waste ofmy time so look at me as an individual and please do not look at my generation( because 80% of them are ignorant vegatables that just eak out a living)

well this year in my english class i have had a 96 average for the first semester but i believe this is due to th fact that literature and english is combined into one class, i under stand literature very well, how ever i do not believe being able to diagram a sentcence( being able to identify the subject, verb, direct object, and indeirect object) will be a required job skill. If you would like to make fun of a 16 year old kid for his grammer skills be my guest

p.s. apparently you do not realize most of the people on this websit live in the deep south

so go ahead and continue to teach us correct grammer

p.p.s all of this was directed at ducknut

The use of grammar is needed. When you have to write a report or a presentation you need to use good grammar. Me personally I am a ditch digger. There 2 types of people;those who read books and those who write them. You could give me a transmission and I will take it apart and tell you how it works. You give me a book on how it works and I would be completly lost

I have filed many reports as well as lists of needed parts for ag. equipment. honestly i can use correct grammer if I really need to but for talking to people every day I choose not to use it.
( it is very important to use corect grammer when you need to order parts for 3 million dollars worth of equipment)

My daughter graduated in August 2011 with a BS in Geology. She now works for a mining company. She works 4 days on, four off and has full bennies including all the retirement / 401K, etc. She is 22 years old and makes $52K to start. She should make at least $80K within three years. She likes exploration geology. If she was not working in mining she would be at her second choice job, in the Bakken oil play in the Williston Basin in ND. She lives in God's country - Montana. Geology is a great career to get into right now. Many of the geologists currently working are nearing retirement and there are not enough to supply the industry going forward.

My son is an EMT and CNA who just completed his two year degree and will probably be entering nurses training in th fall. Nursing is a great portable skill / career.

You would do well to consider either of these.

I have a degree in Chemistry and was a chemist for about 10 years. I have since moved on and am now on the management side of manufacturing. The trends I see now are people who have experience in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma. Acquire those two certificates along with your chosen degree and you will be able to pick the job sector. Pay is very good as well.

Oil/natural gas is where it's at. Definitely worth leaving home for. My advice... Stay away from the drilling side and get a production based job. Much steadier. And most importantly... GET a MF'N 4 YR DEGREE!

I went to Technical college for Drafting and design. I know design metal buildings with specific software and I do special drawings that are needed because I am the only one who can make it happen in a decent amount of time. Lots of my friends are in the oilfield and they make some paper.......I do well, but they make better.

Part of me wishes I had a degree. I have a HS diploma and a Tchnical College Diploma. My field was not even offeren in a 2 year degree......

Drilling side pays more, but fluctuates. Production side is after well is drilled and a oil/gas company flows it and sells what comes out of the ground. Oil/gas wells, pipelines, workover, and all kinds of other stuff. I work for a company that sells chemicals to production companies. I love it. Wish I had known about it when I was your age.

You should also look at oil jobs in the Williston Basin in ND as well as the tar sands in Alberta. They can't find enough guys in either place. You can work in the tar sands, stay at a company-paid for camp, keep your nose clean and away from hookers, drugs and over-imbibing of alcohol and walk away in 5 years with $500K in the bank. Not kidding.

Had a friend move out there, his girlfriends makes $15 an hour as a cashier at a gas station. They have more money than they know what to do with right now.

ive just graduated from LSU with BS in mechanical engineering last may and work as a maintenance engineer at a plant and make right at 80k/year. school is not joke and took me 5 years to complete but is well worth it. i dicked off first year and half of college and was loads of fun. but if you have the ability to understand how things come apart and how they work and are good with math you can make it through engineering just have to have the want and not quit like most people. there aint nothing you cant do if you want it bad enough

+1 on the nurse.
I am currently applying for my masters in nursing. Nursing has been good for me and my family. My shifts consist of 3 12 hour days and the rest I have off. There are also shifts that you can work 6 days on and have 8 days off. You are young and time is going to go by anyways. Go to school. I did my BSN, which is a 4 yr degree in 3 years with 3 kids 14 months apart. If you so choose, you can continue on for your masters which adds 2 more years for a total of 5 years and make $90-$175,000 depending on what you choose to specialize in. Good luck.
