I just put one hour on my brand new PD with a 36hp Vanguard. I have a 1860 Grizzly boat and the top speed I achieved was only 20mph. I noticed my RPMs were only at 3300 at full throttle. I then took it out of the water and put it in neutral and full throttle only achieved 3600 RPMs. It did not sound like it was missing, it was actually running super smooth. Is this a common problem? Governor set screw? linkage problem? I plan on taking it back to the place I bought it, but it is a long drive. Anybody know a quick fix?

Does anyone know how fast their 18' Grizzly can go with a stock prodrive?

I did trim it up as far as I could get out of the water until my MPH started to decrease then I adjusted it to get top speed.

Turn the OOW up to 4300.

OOW? Where is that? Don't know if I saw that in my manual. Do you have a pic of it?

In other words...set your wide open throttle neutral RPM's to 4300.

How do you adjust the open throttle RPS's? Is there a set screw or is it in the linkage?

Turn the gov screw. It's at the bottom of the linkage.

yes and the right side as if you were driving. in between you muffler and the engine there is a screw with a spring around it.

Also look on the linkage there is a half moon shaped thing and make sure it is not get interfered with

The place I bought it from wants me to lug it back (a 2 hour drive) because they say it can be a bunch of things, but I would hate to drive it all the way back for a lame governor adjustment.

You are da man cb5331!!!! I did see that screw earlier today and was tempted to adjust, but hesitated. When I called the shop I bought it from, they said it wasn't that easy and it could be that I was missing on one cylinder due to a plug boot not seating right and to cut a plastic bottle and MacGuiver some sort of sleeve. That didn't sound right because my motor was running super smooth. They also said it could be something to do with the exhaust not opening up. That sounded weird too. I wish they would have tested this thing after they put it on. I am going to piss off my neighbors right now and adjust the screw. That pic is perfect. I searched a good hour on the internet to see a clear diagram of the carb linkage and parts for this motor and could not find anything like this. The manual that came with this motor is way too basic.

I got my RPMs up to 4200, but my low idle is at rocket speed. Around 2300. I am assuming that there is a linkage adjustment or low idle adjustment somewhere?

Can you let me know how to adjust my low idle down to the recommended RPM? Is low idle supposed to be 800-1000 RPM?

see if your throttle butterfly is touching the idle screw on to of the carb

The gov spring should be in the bottom hole. If it is, you may have the wrong spring in it.

Look at that picture where the purple spring (that's the gov spring) is. On the side where the screw is at, you may be able to bend that tab to drop the idle back down.

This motor is a CDI, correct? Marine engine? If so it has a built in rev limiter an the gov is not really needed. Maybe someone can chime in with a way to lock it out or something without affecting the idle.

i had the same problem but it was caused by the linkage. Where the linkage start at the rear of the tiller handle follow the all thread until it reaches first pat attached to the motor. it has a flat side made to stop the throttle from going any further. There is a nut there that was stopping mine from going all the way to the flat side of the stop and i had the exact same symptoms

It does seem to be that the spring is too tight. I can manually force the butterfly back to the low idle set screw, but it takes effort. can I just change where the spring is connected? Stretch the spring? Or your suggestion on bending the tab? What is best. The motor is brand spanking new and only has 1 hour on it. That stinks that they put the wrong spring in.

You can look and see if you can figure out what DDB was talking about. If the spring is not in the bottom hole, it should be and yes go ahead and move it. You can also bend that tab if needed, or possibly the piece of linkage that goes up to the carb.

Is your new motor a marine engine r not? If it's a marine engine, u shouldn't have to adjust anything. If u don't slowly increase throttle out of water to the max it will hit the rev limiter and cut out to around 3600.

take the spring out put a solid linkage in where the spring is set idle and enjoy

Hop I am running a new 2012 36 pd on a 1860 fisher boat it runs 24 to 25 by GPS, two guys and regular stuff in the boat. I run 3800 to 4000 rpm no prob. I run the same rpm's with a hunting load as well.

Before you adjust anything, make sure you have full travel on the throttle slide. On a horizontal you loosen the 8mm screw clamp on the throttle cable, clamp the throttle handle on the tiller fully open and pull the cable so the throttle slide has full travel and re-tighten the clamp. I can't remember the PD setup but assume there is a similar adjustment on the vertical. Picture of horizontal for reference:



Next ensure your idle adjustment screw is set correctly- at idle push the throttle linkage up against the screw and turn the screw so you have a steady ~1100 idle. Horizontal pic, vert is similar:


Set your OOW rpm about ~100 RPM above where you run in the water lightly loaded. ~4200 should be enough unless you have a hot motor. Ensure the governor spring is in the farthest position on the governor plate as posted above. If you are adjusting the governor screw and the idle is pulling up, you can try a governor spring with a longer reach. Those with a purple spring could take advantage of the brown spring used on the CDI motors:
