drop in rpm after exhaust added
just added a single crossover on the swomp 23. after some head scratching, cussin and a few emails to bps i finally got the throttle arm bent the right way and got it mounted this morning at about 1:30am. didnt wanna anger all of the neighbors so i didnt crank it till this morning. ive noticed that my rpms at wot have dropped from about 4080 to 3800. this is with the silencer in. just wondering if this is normal of have i effed something up. i havent tried it without the silencer yet but i didnt expect it to drop rpms lower than stock with it in

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
Why did you bend the throttle arm? Ive never put an exhaust on a 23, but that sure sounds like it could be your problem. May need some adjustment after you bent it.

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
The throttle arm was in the way of the support bracket. I was going to modify the bracket until I emailed bps. They replied that on the 23 you have to bend the throttle arm. They even email photo instructions showing this. I've tweaked on it since I posted this and managed to get up to 3900. I haven't had a chance to put it in the water yet but I'm kinda wondering if the 4080 I was turning before may have been a little too much to begin with

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
well I don't know what rpm's you should be running with a 23 but you dam sho' shouldn't have lost any. Go ahead and get you a mikuni and resolve the throttle arm issue.

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
4080 on 23 WOT sounds about right, I get around 4040 up to 4070 and naturally it revs down to high 3980 or 3990s you can hear it hit the top end. (this is out of water) I was asking a guy selling one of these the other days what kind of performance increase he saw and he said he gained about 100 more RPMS. So if anything you should be increasing not decreasing. Maybe you could take it in to your nearest MMT mechanic or small engine guy to get a second oppinon? Did you let it warm up and run it for a little while?

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
You could have bought a Rev-kit from Performance v-twin and turned the OOW rpm up to 4500. Seeing as you went with the muffler and had to bend the throttle arm to get it to fit, I'm thinking you might want to concentrate on rebending the arm to get your rpms back or possibly it might be as simple as a cable adjustment or gov spring tab adjustment.

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
If it is still turning the same RPM's in the water what does it matter?

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
It wasn't. Before the exhaust I was running around 3700+/- in the water with 2 ppl at 18mph. With the exhaust I was turning around 3400 with just me at 16mph.
I will add tho that there is nothing wrong with the exhaust. I don't think bps anticipated too many folks adding it without a carb swap or they could have used a diff support bracket more like the stock

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
And it went back to normal when you put the stock one on without bending anything?

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
No I had to bend the arm back to the way it was. And before you ask, I couldn't bend it with the bps on due to the lack of clearance. There's no doubt it was a governing issue but I couldn't get it to where it should be. The rpms I was getting were the best to be had without anything being in a bind. There just wasn't enough clearance with everything else stock

Re: drop in rpm after exhaust added
I had a friend with a 23 x-over on and he had no trouble spining up 4000+ RPM's in the water, and I don't believe he ever bent anything.
