 Re: New pup
Don't know how other people feel about them, but I've had good luck with pinch collars. They look horribly mean until you realize how they work. I think they are much more effective-and more humane-than choke collars...but that's just my experience, and I'm no expert

 Re: New pup
^^ yup! My pup was a pain on the leash till I slapped on of these on him. Light pressure is all that is required, he will learn very quick.

 Re: New pup
Can you buy a pinch collar at a local pet store or is this something I might need to order.

 Re: New pup
The first time or two mine pulled from me and wanted to chew on it, that sour apple spray didn't really affect her but the 3rd day or so, she's getting the hang of it, just kept repeating heel and when she got where she was suppose to be, told her good girl ect.. Haven't really pushed the leash much because she's 12 weeks old now but doin good w the whitsle on sit and here.

 Re: New pup
Any pet store should have them. They look mean, look like the spikes parts are designed to poke them in the throat. they aren't. If you look closer, you'll see that they are designed to work sort of like a hinge-the extra skin around the neck gets pinched between two adjacent "hinges". Usually only takes a few times until they get it.

 Re: New pup
12 weeks old is to young for a force collar;build up his retrieving desire first{very important} keep working with a regular collar an leash. He will come around; , some pups come around faster than others, but he will come around. Training a pup is not hard, just got to move along at YOUR pups pace, good luck with your new pup.

 New pup
^^ agreed. You can permanently hurt a young dogs neck easily under the 6 month age. One a the reasons pro's don't OB until 6 months.
Put the leash on him and let him drag it around all day. He'll get use to er real quick.

 Re: New pup
There are some good ideas above. Mudboatman hit a good note w/ let your pup dictate training. You want to get your point across but not at the risk of discouraging their desire...which is very formidable right now. Watch his attitude while training and keep it short in hot weather. The tail is a very good indicator of his mood. If he is wagging it and enthusiastic you are fine. You may look into a nylon choke collar as another option. Letting them wear a regular collar and drag a short lease is a good way to get them comfortable w/ the collar as well. Put a short light lease on the collar that won't trip them up an let them retrieve fun bumpers w/ it on. No matter what you are doing w/ him try to end on a positive every time. Give him the command to do something he does well and when he does it you should praise him like he won superdog. Don't let the pup listening to your wife bother you. You will have the opportunity to gain his respect in a few months when you come back asking about FF. Good Luck

 Re: New pup
Put the pup on the leash in the kitchen while cooking and hang it to a door knob. The pup will get used to the leash restricting what he can do. This worked great on my last two pups.
