pontoon with mud motor
anyone ever put a long tail or surface drive on a small pontoon boat, i picked up a 16 foot set of pontoons that we are going to build a floating blind on it. Thinking about putting a longtail on it
just wondering if it has been tried, just want to be able to move it around in very shallow water
pros cons thoughts

Re: pontoon with mud motor
maybe for a floating blind but that is about it. they draft a good bit of water and you will not be making it through any lillies or mud. but it might make one badass blind.

Re: pontoon with mud motor
A constant argument with a buddy of mine is a pontoon duck boat. Around here, it isn't practical. Pontoons draft too much for us to get into some of the spots we do. They're also not good in some of the rough water we head in to.
Pontoons draft a lot more water than your average mud boat, and don't go through anywhere near the stuff that even a ribbed boat would probably be capable of. It would make a kick ass boat though.

Re: pontoon with mud motor
I will go through a littlebit more grass than an outboard and as shallow as the hull drafts... thats about it.
Another thing to think about is the motor is gunna be mounted way the hell up off the water and run at a steep angle more than likely

Re: pontoon with mud motor
My dual rig drafts about 10-12". A 18-20ft pontoon with a 36PD will draft about the same.
If it was for hunting in 12-30' of watter that is choaked with grass it would be great to idle through with a 23-36HP surface drive.
NOW if you put dual 31hp longtails on it it would be a beast but probably wont hold up.
i'm probably going to make 2 pontoon that are 20x36 and make my own pontoon blind one day and it will have a surface drive on it.
