This shit has taken over our duck ponds in the last few weeks. We've been spraying the lillies every two weeks and now this shit has taken over in no time. Does anyone else have this problem and what is the best way to get rid of it.

Bad chit. There is no getting rid of it. You can spray it to knock it back, but once it's there it's not going away.

You could try calling the state park at caddo and see if they can put you in touch with whoever is working out there now. I think its a&m.

Its some bad shit. They been fighting it out there for years now. They've tried all kinds of stuff. Right now, they are trying some kinda weevil.

It almost looks like it would have been better to let the lillies grow and spray right before the season. Everywhere there is open water is where the Salvania is at.

If it was there, it would have probably choked out the Lilly's anyway. Its bad shit. How much water do you have?

Whatever they were spraying at caddo was working pretty well, but there's just so much water out there its hard to get all of it. That and they have to kill it on the lakes and river systems upstream as well or it'll just come right back.

Best thing you can do is grab a bunch of trash bags and pick it up by hand.

i don't know how salty you have to get it. i just know that around 3500 PPM it will die. that is how salty the water would have to be and i don't know the equation that would be required to kill it.

next time you are out there get 1 quart of vegetable oil and spary it in one pond. Then in another pond mix salt and water about 1 morton salt can into 5 gals of water and see which one works better.

Only 2 ways to kill it. The poison costs over $3000 a gallon and once u spray no water, not even dew, can hit it for 24 hours. The other way is weevils. There should be someone in your area that has some with weevils in it. U just spread some of that salvinia in your pond and over time it will get under control, but it takes more time than u have this year. If it has filled the ponds by now, it will be a foot r more thick by hunting season. 2,4-D don't kill it, as u have seen. U may have lost this coming duck season already, but if u don't get the weevils in there, u will have problems ever hunting the area again. It is some bad stuff, sorry to hear it has filled your ponds.

Toledo Bend had that problem for a while. The SRA has a spray that will kill it. But still have to drag some of it out. After it is dead MM might cut it up enough that it will go out with the tide. Call SRA in Many, La

Biological control

A tiny weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae, found in the native habitat of S. molesta, is currently being studied as a biocontrol. C. salvinae was first used as a biological control in Australia at Lake Moondarra, a recreational lake in Mount Isa, Queensland in 1980. By mid 1981 the weevil had reduced the weed to a few small patches. It ate the leaves of the weed but preferred the buds. Its larvae ate the roots, rhizomes and the buds. As the plant died it turned brown and sank to the bottom of the waterway and decomposed. This weevil was used with success in other parts of the world (13 tropical countries) such as the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea; Sri Lanka; Wappa Dam in Queensland and lagoons (e.g. Kakadu National Park) in the Northern Territory, Australia.[7] In Australia the moth, Samea multiplicalis was also released in the hopes that it would reduce the size of the weed population. While this moth did become established in Australia and spread it was not effective as a biological control. A third species, the grasshopper Pauliana acuminata, was considered but not released.

Mechanical control

Plants are removed by machine or harvesting equipment and by hand which is only suitable for small infestations. Harvesting equipment also can encounter difficulties as it cannot remove all of the infestation, it cannot access shallow areas and equipment can be inhibited by large masses of the plant. Once removed the plant must be dried, burnt or disposed of in a manner that ensures it will not reenter the waterway.

Chemical Control

Chemical control on S. molesta is difficult as it does have some resistance to herbicides. The chemical fluridon has been successfully used but it requires prolonged contact and is not effective if it is suddenly diluted by rainwater or any other influx of water. Other chemicals such as hexazinone and diquat and double chelated copper are used together to kill S. molesta.

our luck the weevil will create some kind of biological upset, kill all the fish as the dead salvania sinks to the bottom and pollutes the rest of the fragile ecosystem. no more crawfish, frogs, turtles, anything!

they have a company that parks a few boats where a buddy of mine launches and they have a boat for when the lillies get thick. its basically a front end loader on a big flatboat. they scoop up all the lillies but im not sure what they do with em as ive never seen it running yet. maybe there is someone like that for hire around you. Just a thought.
