Post Gator Glide - 8 months later
I have the Gator Glide G2. I have recently noticed a drag when I hit lillies, it was sudden as if someone was hitting the brakes. When I first applied the stuff, it was super slick and after about 2 months it wasn't near as slippery on the trailer but still performed the same in the field. The recent drop in performance (8 months later) appears to be due to the product is worn off of the leading edges and the corners.

I spoke with Dave at Gator Glide and this is about the life expectancy considering the abuse. I have put it through and over everything North Florida has to offer (veggies, stumps, rocks, oyster bars, etc..) I do plan to recoat in the near future, the good thing about it is all you have to do is wipe it down with acetone and reapply over the existing.

This appears to be a seasonal application but once you have it on, touch ups are a piece of cake. Below are some pictures of before and after. You will see many scratches but for the most part it is still covered.

I am still very pleased with it and will go back with another coat but I am considering the G4, they say it is a little tougher but not quite as slick...

Here's the fresh coat.

Here is what the rake looks like now.

In this one, on the bottom of the rake out by the edge, the product is practically gone, this is where the "brakes" are, the spots where the leading edges catches most of the drag.

You have convinced me to give the G4 a try.

Since you are in Florida, are you running a lot of sandy/abrasive type muds and bottoms that may have contributed to any wear? I can certainly understand the oyster beds. Those things are tough on anything!

I put the g4 on my rig about 2 months ago. It seems to hold up good in the sand and hard bottoms. But like you said it doesn't seem as slick on the trailer as it once was.

Frog,

I wanted to get this back to the top incase I have misspoken or if you wanted to add to the topic. I have some gator hunting to do in some rocky areas so before I recoat I'm going to run it like it is. I have a buddy with a 18x60 that we are planning to do as well. His has never had the stuff. If I remember right you said i can apply the base coat to the leading edges over the original G2 right and this should help it last longer? You didnt have the base coat when I did mine the first time but I love the stuff.

Will,

If the lead edges have worn down to the aluminum you could put the GatorBase over the G2 in those areas, after sanding and wiping down with acetone. Ultimately you want the base under the G2. You'll want to put g2 on top again. All the force that will be distributed across the entire bottom starts by hitting the leading edges so they take the most abuse.

While I got this soap box, I don't want to lead anyone to believe GatorGlide will stand up to oyster bars and gravel or even sand forever. If you are punching oyster bars it going to scratch the hell out of it. (I have personally worn 3/8" poly down to nothing running sand in a airboat) There is no and never has been a paint on product that will stand up in those conditions! If that's the area you're running you're going to be doing more touch up than the other guy. GatorGlide is so easy to touch up you can have it done in less than an hr soup to nuts. If you've already applied it you know what I mean. The performance increase far outweighs the maintenance burden even in extreme condition.
