35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new battery
Trying out a 35 gtr rig, had this problem the other day. I ran the boat for about two hours then turned the motor off. Went to restart and it did nothing but click. I knew it was the battery so I undid the cables and put it on another battery to start it then connected back on the original battery thinking it would recharge. I was wrong had to jump it two more times. Then the next day I hooked it to a good battery and nothing happened at all no click or anything. Checked the switch it is good cleaned terminals at starter, checked fuse, still nothing. This is on a steering model. Any ideas?

Is the battery good?
With the engine running, check the voltage output with a multimeter.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
Checked the 25 amp fuse by the starter. The boat actually has 3 35 GTRs I took the battery from one of the other motors and used it I know it was a good battery because it started the other motor fine. My dad has a mudbuddy hd 45 so the wiring is a little different on the gtr. The harness that connectes to the battery has the main starter leads and then another set of wires. The other wires include 2 large relays and some kind of two post 45 amp fuse. I'm just confused on how I was able to jump it off and it run fine to it not even jumping off now

Well they are all wired individually. Just didn't know what the relays and fuse are for.
Can't check the voltage output if the motor won't start lol

THE MOTOR WILL NOT CRANK WITH A GOOD BATTERY! I have tried a 100% charged battery and got nothing. I'm not a newbie!

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
I'm not sure how it's set up for remote steering but if the switch is bad to engage the clutch it may not let you start the motor. Can you get the clutch to engage and disengage when toggling the switch with the key in the run position?

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
The battery I used to start the motor next to it is the one I used so I know it is not the battery. Kill switch is good I've reset it several times. Unless the switch itself is bad I will bypass that when I get home. Thanks for all the input. Great forum!

I don't think the clutch is getting power either. I'll check that switch to

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
What would case it not to charge the battery once started? I know the motor has to be running around 2300 rpms to charge but could something in the starter be blocking the charge from reaching the battery. Not to familiar with the mechanics of the charging system since it is different from a belt driven alternator.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
A bad stator or rectifier could cause it not to charge when running. I had that issue once.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
Mine recently quit charging after a flywheel magnet let loose and tore the stator up.

Ok I'm at the motor now. Turn key on and I can hear the clutch engage and disengage. Still no fire

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
Moved the kill switch wires to another kill switch still nothing. Trim still works lol. One other thing I noticed was that I have left the key turned on last night. Don't know if that would run the battery down but it didn't. Swapped the battery to another motor cranked it no problem.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
When you pulled the 25a fuse was it clean? I've seen one that the fuse wasn't burnt but I had to clean it to get it to work.

Seemed clean to me. I'll pull one from the other motor and try that. Having three motors helps on trouble shooting lol

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
5.9 take a volt ohm meter and check battery voltage on that motor at the positive lead at the starter. should be witih .5 volts of ur battery voltage at the battery. unplug ur soleniod wire key ur switch u should see battery voltage at that wire. now do a ohms test of ur ground at the ground wire at said engine.post up results. if u don't have meter take a jump wire at the 12 volt starter wire. short across to the solenoid wire.with 12volts motor should crank turn over. also unplug ur stator connection at the motor and check for corrision or burnt wiring. that can also cause a starting and charging failure. battery voltage should be more than 12.5 volts. on a charged battery.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
Richard you got me on the right path. Positive side sparked and looked good, but the negative at the motor was another story. Cleaned it up and got a click, filed it down to some good metal and tried it again, fired right up. Never underestimate the power of a good ground. Could this cause the charging issue as well? Thanks for everyone's help!

Yup. Clean it real well then put a volt meter in it to see if your are charging.
I also have a picture you and the rest of us cummins owners will enjoy.

Re: 35 GTR drained battery then would not start on a new bat
I would put a battery charger on a high amp charge while you are trying to start it. I swore my battery was good too and it ended up being bad. It just didn't have the amps needed to turn the motor over, everything else worked great & sounded like there was no loss in power.

On a side note from this topic. I think I got a little chub when I looked at the pics of that rig.
