 steering consoles
has anyone used the short shaft motors with a steering console just wandering how the motor handles in shallow water or mud? with the electric trim? instead of a tiller handle?

 Re: steering consoles
I have one it handles fine in the mud, but if u have the money get hydro steering instead of the teleflex. U will b able to work the motor better in hard mud

 Re: steering consoles
It was gonna cost me $1000 to do the hydro. And I think all the teleflex was somewhere around $300

 Re: steering consoles
Teleflex is a brand dont let that confuse you.
Its either cable (mechanical) or hydraulic steering.
Spend the money for hydraulic for sure!
Cable steer = no power steering on your car Hydraulic = power steering on your car

 Re: steering consoles
Get hydro steering, or don't get a console at all. If all you can afford is cable, keep your tiller because if you put it in the right bind, it'll break and leave you stranded.

 Re: steering consoles
I have had two console rigs, both with teleflex steering. Granted, I am thinking about going to hydro, but there are other pieces I would spend money your money on first. The first is reverse., or hydraulic reverse for a Pro Drive. It is a must for a console, especially a Pro Drive. The second are mods to your motor. Heads and exhaust first, followed by a carb and then a cam. People have various opinions on the order, and I might do a cam before carb, but that is a toss up for me. After all f this I would add Hydro Steering. Just my $.02.
BTW, my first rig was a short shaft, and as long as your transom s designed for a short shaft, there shouldn't be a difference in performance. A console rig will never perform as well in the mud as a tiller, hydro or not. Ths is what you give up for a comfortable easy drive.

 Re: steering consoles
Yep, everyone has their own priorities. Because I think it's completely insane to put motor mods anywhere close to the top of the list if money is tight.

 Re: steering consoles
Like i said that is just my opinion. I think It just depends how you use your boat. I have long runs with heavy loads. A 22 MPH plow is not an option for me, I don't care how smoothly she steers at tha speed.

 Re: steering consoles
How smooth the steering is is only a small part of the argument for me.... It's more about durability and dependability. And if you spend any time at all rooting around in the mud/vegetation, there is a noticeable improvement in performance with hydro.

 Re: steering consoles
mine broke while runnin open water and making a turn. it was less than a year old and wore out. hydro would be at the top of my list on a new rig.

 Re: steering consoles
I have noticed on a cc with no feed back teleflex if turned all the way to one side and in the trottle you can't get it back strait. That is not good for when you run thick stuff. Hydro all the way
