Post Mallards?
I've heard a few people shot some mallards over the last week, but we have yet to see any.
My question is, how far south are the majority of mallards mostly seen/shot? Is north/central Louisiana the furtest they migrate south? If they do come down below I-10, what location would be a good place to prepare to hunt(not looking for your place). Hardwood swamps, open lakes.

I was asking around on my facebook page to see if they are being seen in the Atchafalaya Spillway. It's been a long time since I've hunted that area, but I remember shooting some back in the mid/late 80's. Just trying to find out if it's worth a trip.

Any info is appreciated.

Post Re: Mallards?
Seen a picture this morning of what a coworker's son shot this morning. THey had 4-5 mallards, pintails, redheads, ringnecks and spoonies. That was somewhere out of Gibson area. I think it was someone's lease.
And he had a pic from the weekend when he hunted the PAC eastside. He had shot a few that day also.

So my question is answered. They do make it this far south. I guess we jsut need more cold weather.

Up here on the Nebraska / South Dakota border, we still haven't seen the big mallard migration yet. Looking at the extended forecast, it might be a couple of weeks before we get the big push of mallards.

There are huntable numbers of birds down here, just not in large numbers.

I haven't even been able to get out yet due to work and other obligations, but everyone that I've talked to says they're seeing a lot more mallards a lot earlier. It all has to do with the terrible drought in the central U.S. Birds aren't hanging around there long.

These are the first two I've killed in my area in years. My buddy shot 1 on our lease last year. When I first started hunting at 10 yrs old and through my teenage years mallards were common this far south in Louisiana but not these days. I sent one to get mounted.

Congrats brotha. I haven't mounted one yet either simply because I can't decided what I want to mount first, mallard, pintail or possibly a really good looking wigeon. I've shot several mallards that I would consider, but not really any pinnies with big enough sprigs or wigeon with enough color.

Blue, certainly you are just making fun??? Nobody can be that stupid!!! I can show you tags from all over the country swarming places because of a few internet comments or heaven forbid a magazine article. Search You-tube for bayou meto in AR. There are a lot of people that don't get a chance at mallards and will make a journey to get some. Either you don't really like hunting much OR Let me stress once again...YOU MUST BE AN IDIOT!!!

Arkabutla Lake:
Yellow circle is where I am hunting. Red circle is Hernando Point launch. Anywhere in the red triangle will have ducks all over you. Good Luck!

New Picture (2).jpg

I promise you, there are a lot less people hunting here than the Wax Lake outlet, the Atchafalaya Delta, Lake Salvador or any other South LA WMA. Probably because nobody up here owns a surface drive. There may have been half a dozen surface drives there this weekend. Everybody else hunting with outboards. Corps dropping lake levels about 1.25"/day to meet conservation pool curve making it even tougher to get to the ducks. I don't think I am in any great near term danger of being flooded by hunters. Even at conservation pool levels, the lake has over 5000 acres of surface water. When lake is full, it's over 11,000 acres. Plenty of room to hunt.

Shamu you say 11,000 acres is plenty of room for everyone to hunt. I hunt a lake that is 28,000 acres and people are still hunting on top of eachother. Dont think for one second that there arent people that will load there shit up and head that way if they know ducks are there. It takes one day scouting for a new comer to find birds to hunt.

This makes no sense at all. None. Be proud if you're killing mallards, even tell a friend "hey man, I'm smokin' the mallards." But why in the hell get on a public forum and advertise with maps especially during duck season? Crazy stuff. That's why I'm perfectly fine hunting alone..... The majority can't seem to keep their damn mouth closed. And OD is right, 11k acres ain't shit. Give me a little gas (and motor that'll run) and an afternoon and ill be shooting your ducks the next day.
