Post When can I legally hunt over a millet food plot.
I want to plant some millet on my lease to use as a food plot. My research says that it should be planted in the spring/may?
LAWF site says that it is legal to hunt over "in subsequent years". I rake this to mean if I planted in 5/13, I couldn't legally hunt it until the 2014 season. Correct?

I always understood it was one year afterwards

You can hunt over it the first year, you just aren't allowed to manipulate it...knock it down, spread it out, etc.
If it grows back on its own the next year, its fair game to "manipulate". That's the way I read the rules, and the rules are fed so they should carry state to state. Look at the regs and see what you think.

" Baiting (the following baiting rules have been established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service):

A hunter MAY hunt any migratory game bird:
over standing crops, standing flooded crops, and flooded harvested crops
at any time over natural vegetation that has been manipulated
where seeds or grains have been scattered as a result of normal agricultural planting, harvesting, or post-harvest manipulation
over crops or natural vegetation where grain has been inadvertently scattered as a result of entering or leaving the field, placing decoys, or retrieving downed birds
using natural vegetation or crops to conceal a blind, provided that if crops are used, no grain or other feed is exposed, deposited, distributed, or scattered in the process
except water fowl and cranes where grain or other feed has been distributed or scattered as the result of the manipulation of a crop or livestock feeding
A hunter MAY NOT:
hunt migratory birds with the aid of bait, or on or over any baited area
hunt over any baited area until 10 days after all baiting materials have been removed
hunt waterfowl or cranes over manipulated planted millet, unless the millet was planted more than one year prior to hunting
hunt waterfowl or cranes over crops that have been manipulated, unless the manipulation is a normal agricultural planting, harvesting, or post-harvest manipulation"

You can legally plant it in the summer, flood it, and hunt it that year.

You just can't knock it down, bush hog it, run over it ect.

But you can knock it down legally from entering and leaving the field, setting out decoys, and retrieving birds?

I honestly think of it like a dove field. If the "loose seed" falls of a plant. It's not baiting. Kinda like shooting ducks and geese over cut corn. Never had any problems, probably comes down to the GW's mood on how much proving you have to do.

PP...what do you mean by change? I've read that millet tends to re-seas itself from year to year, and that, in fact it can be used to help control erosion. Just curious. I certainly do t want to plant something that changes the marsh in a negative way and that I can't get rid of!

Positive change helps with erosion , birds stayed longer when not pressured to hard
Widgeons sure loved it

We planted Japanese millet I think they called it

Yes, Jap millet. As he said, give em somewhere they don't get shot at, if possible. Don't flood it too early if u can help it.
