 17x54 GTB outboard size
Anyone use a outboard after duck season to fish? Thinking I would like to go his route to save wear and tear on the GTR..

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Buddy has a 90 Yamaha on his 1754 G3, I'm sure something similar would be fine.

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Slap a 90 on it with a jack plate so you can eliminate the bounce and run prolly mid-upper 40s

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
I took the 35GTR off my last 1754 excel and put on a 60hp for a trip to Canada where I needed to run 20+ miles one way. It ran fine and pushed a heavy load. It turnd differently with the flat bottom and bounced if I turn sharper. I put the surface drive back on later that fall.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
I got a 2010 50 Merc yesterday 4 stroke. I wasnt to happy with the maiden voyage. The boat barley got out of its own way and on step. Top speed was around 28-29 mph. I know props size and pitch are everything when it comes to outboards but without having a tack im shooting in the dark.. I was really hoping to get HIGH 30's loaded down with this set up. I might have hoped for to much. Any ideas on prop size for this set up? I took a mesurment and I got 10" by 15 pitch. 15p is stamped on the prop. This is the prop that came with the motor. If I cant get it right ill just sell being I got it for a great price and its a super clean motor

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
That's a fact! I had a 16x60 welded bateau with 24" sides with a 75 evinrude at one time and I was lucky to get anything over 35 in it, and that was with a 17p prop. That GT boat is more boat to push than you would think!

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
Ran a 10.6 with less pitch today and nothing changed! The motor feels like it wants more at times. You can almost feel it take off for a sec but fall back off. Same speeds around 26-27mph. Something gotta be wrong with the motor. A guy in 25hp tiller passed me up in the canal!! Lol. Fuck my life!

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
My fishing boat is a 17' deep V Lund with a 50 HP Merc 4-stroke tiller. It came with a 13 pitch prop and I went down to 12 (4 blade stainless) for better hole shot went loaded with three guys. BUT, that boat is 1,000 lbs dry, has a 27 gal fuel tank, 3 batteries, two large live wells, two trolling motors. Top speed is about 29mph (can hit 30 at times). I lost just a little on top speed going down to a 12 from a 13.
With your rig (should be much lighter), and the fact that you have a flat bottom that get's on plane faster, I would think you'd want at least a 13 pitch or higher.
With your 10.6 prop, are you instantley on plane?? Does the motor seem to rev high? Sounds like it's pitched way too low to me...

 Re: 17x54 GTB outboard size
I think you can get a little more out of this motor by removing a small air restrictor at the intake. I believe I remember seeing a post about this on another site about 2 or 3 years ago. Something about the ecu automatically sensing the increased airflow and recalibrating to a higher hp level--maybe 60ish hp. Might want to check into this before going about it blindly.

Tried again today after we raised the motor to the highest setting and ran both props again. Still 25-28. FML. Calling baggy and bringing the motor back where I bought it.
